OFFICE MANAGEMENT OPTION ======================== Option Aims/Objectives & Careers -------------------------------- The Office Management Option is intended to provide students with a broad based business education and training in administrative skills to meet the growing demand for professionally trained office managers. It aims at producing a generalist with marketable skills who can fit into large-sized as well as small-sized companies. In essence, this option prepares graduates to work as administrators, office managers in charge of administrative services, and personal assistants to chief executives. They are expected to manage people, equipment and resources. They should be practical problem solvers and effective communicators who know the basics of work procedures and can cross boundaries and work between functional areas, e.g. personnel, records control, purchasing and work/information processing. Students enrolled in this Option will: 1) study the management concepts, the nature of business organization and its functional areas and develop competence required for their specific career choice. 2) study the theory and practice of information systems and administrative office management in order to understand the design of practical office systems. 3) gain an appreciation of the potential and limitations of the computer and are given an opportunity to use electronic office equipment in order to understand the capabilities and benefits of automation. 4) develop conceptual and adaptive skills to handle decision-making situations and cope with the changing demands in a complex and dynamic environment. Option Curriculum ----------------- The study plan is as follows: Year 1 Principles of Accounting, Introduction to Business, Principles of Management, Principles of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics for Business, Computer Applications in Business, English for Business, Communication in Modern Chinese, and Religion & Philosophy subject. Year 2 Principles of Law, Organizational Theory & Behaviour, Business Communications, Principles of Human Resources Management, Financial Management, Management Information Systems, Office Systems and Procedures, Religion & Philosophy subject, and two other Elective subjects. Year 3 Strategic Management, Project, Business Telecommunication Systems, Company Secretarial Practice, Managerial Communications, Small Business Management, Automated Office Systems, Seminar in Office Management, one of the following subjects: Hong Kong Economy, Marketing Management, Management Research Methods, and one other Elective subject. .
