MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS OPTION ===================================== Option Aims/Objectives & Careers -------------------------------- As Hong Kong's economy becomes progressively high-tech oriented, there is a growing demand for graduates trained as developers and managers of information technology (IT) to utilize computers in an increasingly automated business, fast-expanding but competitive environment. These Management Information Systems professionals need a balanced knowledge of IT applications and management concepts in order to be productive links between the two disciplines. The Management Information Systems Option of the BBA (Honours) Degree Course is designed to meet the growing needs for managers and end- users of computer-based information systems. It aims to produce graduates who can plan and design user-compatible systems, and analyze and implement new technologies, as well as evaluate and manage new and existing information systems. These graduates are end-user oriented. They have a solid understanding of the business framework for computer applications and are able to communicate with IT professionals on users' needs. In addition, they also make effective use of information technology to enhance productivity, accuracy, and effectiveness, as well as offer efficient support services to professional and managerial tasks. The MIS Option is designed specifically to achieve the following objectives: 1) To recognize strategic opportunities for the application of MIS. 2) To contribute to a team engaged in the planning, controlling and implementing an information system. 3) To understand and improve the information structure of organizations and their operations. 4) To contribute to a team which applies formal methods in the evaluation, design, implementation, and maintenance of an information system. 5) To develop information as a corporate resource. 6) To liaise with IT professionals and end-users in catering to management needs. 7) To develop an awareness of ethical and professional principles in the design and application of MIS. Option Curriculum ----------------- The study plan is as follows: Year 1 Principles of Accounting, Introduction to Business, Principles of Management, Principles of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics for Business, Computer Applications in Business, English for Business, Communication in Modern Chinese, and Religion & Philosophy subject. Year 2 Principles of Law, Organizational Theory & Behaviour, Management Science, Management Information Systems, Production and Operations Management, Business Systems Analysis and Design, Programming and End-User Computing, Business Communications, Religion & Philosophy subject, and two other Elective subjects. Year 3 Strategic Management, Project, Development of Small MIS Systems, Telecommunication and Automation Systems in Business, Seminar in MIS, Strategic Planning for MIS, Decision Support and Expert Systems, one of the following subjects: Principles of Human Resources Management, Managerial Communications, and one other Elective subject. .
