ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE MAJOR

Major Aims & Objectives/Careers
-------------------------------

The intellectual aims of the English Language and Literature Major 
include:

1)   the presentation of a coherent discipline which ensures rigorous 
     mental training, the development of independent, critical 
     thinking, and an appreciation of the life of the mind;

2)   the instruction of students in literature and language studies in 
     order that their minds may be informed by great art, thought, and 
     the expression of humane ideals;

3)   the dissemination of the central works of the Western literary 
     tradition to yet another generation of young people; the 
     preservation of these cultural treasures; the relating of these 
     works to the study of language;

4)   the encouragement of an enthusiasm for life-long learning so that 
     students will be prepared and able to adapt to changing personal, 
     social, and political conditions.

The practical objectives of the English Language and Literature Major 
include the education of graduates who are:

1)   prepared to enter postgraduate study requiring sophisticated 
     knowledge of English language and/or literature;

2)   prepared to enter a wide diversity of careers in education, civil 
     service, business, and cultural affairs for which fluent English 
     and flexible, critical and imaginative thinking are necessary.


Career Prospects
----------------

Their grounding in these areas will direct graduates to vocations 
where high competence in English and a flexible and confident 
approach to information are required.  Career openings will be over 
the whole range of education, business and banking, public relations, 
communications, publishing, the media, the public sector, and other 
developing opportunities.


Major Curriculum
----------------

Core Subjects:

1)   Introduction to Language and Literature: Introduction to the 
     Study of Literature, The Sounds and Words of English, Language 
     and Culture or Literature and Society.

2)   Requisite Skills: English Skills, English Enhancement.

3)   Oral and Literary Traditions: Narrative Art, Discursive Prose, 
     Western Drama, Western Poetry and Poetics.

4)   Language Studies: English Grammar and Meaning, Language 
     Acquisition and Language Learning, Language and Society, Language 
     Pragmatics.

5)   Honours Project


Elective Subjects:

Students may choose subjects from ONE of the three concentrations:

1)   Language in Depth:
     Phonetics, Topics in English Grammar, Language Change and 
     Language Contact, Vocabulary in Context, Bilingualism, Special 
     Topics in Linguistics, Text Linguistics, Approaches to Grammar, 
     Discourse Analysis, Language and Education, and Third Language.

2)   Literature in Depth:
     The Novel, Modern Drama, Poetry, American Literature, Western 
     Critical Approaches to Literature, Special Topics in Literature, 
     Creative Writing, Creative Writing Workshop, Twentieth Century 
     Fiction, Twentieth Century Poetry, Shakespeare and His 
     Contemporaries.

     Single Author Forum (Prose Fiction); Single Author Forum 
     (Poetry); Single Author Forum (Drama)

3)   Stylistics and Comparative Literature:
     Comparative Literature I (Theory & Methodology), Comparative 
     Literature II (Chinese & Western Literary Relations), Western 
     Critical Approaches to Literature, Literature and Translation, 
     Special Topics in Literature, Special Topic in Western Critical 
     Theory, Styles & Structures, One Elective from Literature in 
     Depth: 3000 level.
