BA (HONS) IN ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Course Aims
-----------

The aims of the Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Arts and Social 
Sciences are:

a)   To provide students with an education up to honours degree level 
     in a single subject discipline which is studied in depth, thus 
     ensuring a rigorous mental training and the development of 
     students' critical faculties.

b)   To balance this in-depth study of a single discipline with a 
     carefully structured broadening experience aimed in particular 
     at developing an interest in and understanding of education in 
     the broadest sense of that word.  This is to be achieved through 
     an appropriate balance of major, supporting and complementary 
     studies and guidance given to students.

c)   To provide a form of bilingual training in both Chinese and 
     English which will enable students to operate effectively in 
     local and international environments.

d)   To provide a balanced, comprehensive and integrated 
     understanding of the history, geography, language and culture 
     necessary for Hong Kong's successful functioning in its Asian 
     and global setting.

e)   To provide a thorough training in the chosen Major, adequate for 
     embarking on a career whether in education or other relevant 
     fields such as the civil service, international business, 
     service sectors and cultural institutions.

f)   To encourage an enthusiasm for lifelong learning which in some 
     instances will lead to postgraduate studies or to a variety of 
     careers and, where necessary, to a change of career as the 
     demands of a highly dynamic society require it.

Course Curriculum
-----------------

To attain these goals, students enrolled in the BA(Hons) in Arts and 
Social Sciences course are required to complete 63 units of the 
prescribed units in the Major from one of the following areas: 
Chinese Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, 
Geography, Government and International Studies, History, Religious 
Studies or Sociology; 25 units in Complementary Studies subjects; 9 
units in supporting subjects and 3 units in non-major elective 
subjects.

Upon successful completion of all the units as well as the Honours 
Project, students will be granted the BA (Hons) in Arts & Social 
Sciences.  The students' cumulative (weighted) Grade Point Average 
will determine which of the Honours classifications will be awarded.
