APPLICATION PROCEDURES ====================== Application for Admission through JUPAS --------------------------------------- The Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) is a scheme designed to enable students to apply for admission to the following seven tertiary institutions in Hong Kong: City University of Hong Kong Hong Kong Baptist University Lingnan College The Chinese University of Hong Kong The Hong Kong Polytechnic University The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology The University of Hong Kong Who should apply through JUPAS? ------------------------------- Applicants should apply through JUPAS if they are either Secondary 7 students in local schools sitting for the HKALE in 1996, or non- school applicants seeking admission on the strength of their results of the HKALE taken in 1996 or in any previous years. They are only required to complete a single application form for this purpose. Applicants applying through JUPAS are not allowed to submit separate applications for admissions to full-time or sandwich programmes of the individual institutions. How to apply? ------------- In September 1995 the JUPAS Office (JO) will provide copies of the application form, the JUPAS Guide and the prospectuses of the seven participating institutions to secondary schools in Hong Kong. Applicants who are Secondary 7 students in local schools should submit their application forms to their school principals who will return the forms to the JO on their behalf, while applicants who are not Secondary 7 students in local schools should submit their application forms directly to the JO. Things to note -------------- Applicants who are applying for admission to courses offered by the University should: 1. read the JUPAS Guide and this Prospectus carefully before they make their study programme choices; 2. refer to Section III on University Entrance Requirements to ensure that they will satisfy both General University Entrance Requirements and the Course Entrance Requirements; 3. list their study programme (course/major/option) choices in order of preference, and enter the appropriate course codes (and option codes, if any); 4. complete all sections of the application form; and 5. note the important dates, details and procedures for the 1996 JUPAS admissions exercise as mentioned in the JUPAS Guide. Please also note that the results of HKCEE and HKALE submitted for assessment must be obtained at one sitting. Results from combined sittings will NOT be accepted. Interviews and Tests -------------------- Applicants may be invited to attend interviews, auditions, and aptitude/skill tests. However, not all applicants will be interviewed. An applicant who has not been invited to an interview should not assumed that he/she is not being considered for admission. Selection criteria ------------------ Assessment for admissions is generally based on the applicant's: (i) academic achievements in HKALE and HKCEE; and/or (ii) satisfactory performance at an interview, test or audition; and (iii) satisfying any other criteria (such as principals' reports) as considered relevant by the respective course(s). Admission offers ---------------- Each application will be rated by the University based on the above selection criteria. Qualified applicants for each course will then be ranked. The ranked lists are submitted to the JO. The JO computer in one round of processing will match each applicant's order of preference with the ratings of various institutions so that the applicant will be offered the highest of his/her preferences for which his/her rating makes him/her eligible. Admission offers will be announced on 12 August 1996 through newspapers and posting at the seven institutions. Successful applicants are required to reply in person to the institution concerned on 13-15 August 1996 to indicate their acceptance of the offer. Applicants admitted to the University will be required to pay the tuition fees for the First Semester (approx. $18,800) and complete the enrollment procedures on or before 16 August 1996. Applicants with first attempt of HKALE in 1993 or before -------------------------------------------------------- To enable those applicants who took their first attempt of HKALE in 1993 or before (and hence, did not have the chance of studying any AS subjects) to seek admission to the University on the strength of their HKALE results, they are allowed to substitute the AS subject Chinese Language & Culture requirement by a third AL subject, i.e. they need only the AS subject Use of English and an additional AL subject to satisfy the 'Two of the Three AS stipulation' in the University Entrance Requirements. Application for Direct Admission -------------------------------- Applicants who are: 1. applying for admission on the basis of qualifications other than their HKALE results; or 2. currently enrolled as full-time or sandwich degree students in any of the seven participating institutions; or 3. overseas students; or 4. mature applicants (age 25 and over) should not apply through JUPAS. Instead, they should apply to the University for direct admission. An applicant may select in order of preference up to a maximum of three study programmes from among the courses/majors/options offered by the University. Applicants may be invited to attend interviews, auditions, and aptitude/skill tests. Application forms for direct admission to the University in 1996 are available from January 8 to April 13, 1996. Please direct all related enquiries to the Admissions Section. Double Registration ------------------- Unless otherwise approved by the University, students admitted to the full-time programmes of the University are expected to study full- time in the curriculum concerned and are not permitted to register concurrently for any other qualification either at this University or at any other local institutions of higher learning. Students in breach of this regulation are subject to discontinuation of their studies at the University. .
