IV. INSURANCE COVERAGE 1. Employee's Compensation a. The University has insured all its employees against personal injuries or damages arising from accidents occurring while they are at work as required under the Employee's Compensation Ordinance (Cap. 202). Compensation to staff in case of accident will be determined in accordance with the Employee's Compensation Ordinance. Maximum coverage under the Employee's Compensation Ordinance is currently as follows: Death : HK$1,512,000 (maximum) Total Permanent Disablement : HK$1,728,000 (maximum) b. Claim Notification In the event that personal injury by accident occurs during working hours, staff must inform the Personnel Office as soon as practicable. The Personnel Office will, as required under the Ordinance, file a notification to the Labour Department. The Personnel Office will also send a copy of the notification to the Finance Office for insurance claim. 2. Personal Accident Insurance for Gratuity-bearing Contract Staff a. While staff who are members of the University Superannuation Scheme will have insurance coverage for death and total permanent disability, all gratuity-bearing contract staff are provided with a worldwide Personal Accident Insurance Plan to insure them against accidental death and permanent disablement arising directly out of accidents in the course of employment. Full compensation of 24 times monthly Basic Salary will apply for death while a sliding scale applies for permanent disablement. b. Claim Notification Staff should inform the Finance Office as soon as practicable upon occurrence of accident and provide all documentary evidence relating to the damage. 3. Travel Insurance Coverage (For Staff and Students) a. Staff members going overseas for business/attending conference and students going overseas while participating in activities organised by the University are automatically covered by a travel insurance policy. For the purpose of making claims, Heads of Departments/Offices should keep the following data for each trip: i. Names of staff members / students ii. Start date and end date of the business trip / student activity iii. Itinerary (e.g. HK – Beijing – HK) iv. Purpose of the trip (e.g. conference) b. Terms and Conditions In case of emergency, the staff member may make a collect call to the hotline and quote the policy number for assistance: Policy Number * : GT98000001-01 24-hour emergency hotline : (852) 2851 1990 Maximum insured period : 6 months Age limit : 80 Aggregate limit per accident : HK$50 million (*Note: The above Policy Number will be valid up to 30 June 2000, changes will be promulgated by the Finance Office.) c. Insurance cost of business trips will be funded from central insurance budget. For staff staying behind after the business trip who wish to enjoy the same cover, they could submit a crossed cheque made payable to "Hong Kong Baptist University" to the Finance Office for the premium of the non-business trip. e. Staff going on non-business trips, e.g. staff development programme and leave trips, who wish to arrange insurance coverage may seek assistance from the Finance Office (Ext. 5030). 4. Members of staff are advised that the University is not responsible for the loss of or damage to their personal property and so will not provide insurance coverage for them. .
