II. ANNUAL LEAVE 1. Annual leave shall be provided to staff as in accordance with their terms of service. Applications for annual leave should be made well in advance for approval by the respective Heads of Departments/Offices/immediate supervisor, and to be endorsed by the Deans or Vice-Presidents as appropriate. 2. For academic and equivalent administrative staff, since the earned annual leave is calculated on the basis of calendar days, leave cannot normally be approved for a period of less than 7 days. The maximum accumulation of annual leave is 91 calendar days. 3. For support and ancillary staff, earned annual leave cannot be carried forward from one leave year (1 September to 31 August of the following year) to the next. 4. For staff on fixed-term appointment, earned annual leave should be taken within the contract period. There will not be any payment in lieu of leave not yet taken at the end of the fixed- term appointment. 5. Staff are advised to take annual leave on an annual basis to get rest from work, and to avoid excessive accumulation of leave all taken at one time. Notwithstanding this, annual leave will be granted only after proper provision has been made for the execution of teaching/administrative and/or other duties during the period of leave concerned. In the case of academic staff, annual leave shall cover the period of lower academic activity in the summer months. An academic staff member is not normally permitted to take annual leave whilst classes are in session unless there are strong compassionate grounds for doing so, subject to the approval of the Faculty Dean/Head of Department. .
