The deadline for applications is November 15 (Friday). For 2002-03, there will only be two rounds of applications (November 2002 and March 2003). All Category II proposals received after the deadline will not be considered until the next call for applications. However, this deadline does not apply to Category I proposals which are processed throughout the year. Category I is for projects with a funding limit of HK$50,000 per project and Category II covers those with a HK$200,000 funding limit for each project. Principal investigators should include the medical cost (three per cent of salary) and employer's MPF contribution (five per cent of salary) in the budget calculations if research support staff are to be employed. Library News New Databases The Library has subscribed to the following new databases: (i) China Journal Net §§ƒÍ¥¡€Z†Ù ¢w §Â€v‚ž±MøË This online database provides indexes and abstracts to thousands of Chinese journals, most of which have full text retrievable online from 1994 onwards. The Library has subscribed to the subset of literature, history and philosophy in full text. Its subject coverage ranges from Chinese literature, philosophy, and history to various aspects of social sciences. (ii) ATLA Religion Database (EBSCOhost) Compiled by the American Theological Library Association, this online database covers Biblical studies, world religions, church history, and religious perspectives on social issues. It contains bibliographic records from journals, essays, book reviews, etc. dating back to 1949. In addition, the database links to full text of 128 journal titles provided by other sources are also available. (iii) Alternative Medicine (EBSCOhost) The database contains bibliographic records from over 400 journals, books, newspapers, conference proceedings, and several other document types with subject coverage on allied and complementary medicine dating back to 1985. (iv) Oxford Reference Online It covers about 100 key Oxford dictionaries and reference works. It is an important reference tool offering comprehensive coverage across the subject spectrum from General Reference and Language to Science and Medicine, and from Humanities and Social Sciences to Business. (v) ChoiceReviews Online It provides web access to the reviews of significant current books and electronic resources in various disciplines since 1988. (vi) Complimentary databases from EBSCOhost Three complimentary databases namely MAS Ultra - School Edition, Military Library FullText, and Primary Search, which are bundled with Academic Search Elite, are available for use. MAS Ultra contains full text from over 460 periodicals covering general reference, health, science and other areas. Military Library FullText provides full texts from over 320 military and general interest publications. Primary Search provides an easy roadmap to access Primary Search, Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia and Encyclopedia of Animals. The image collection is especially useful for incorporating pictures in assignments. (vii) Complimentary databases from ProQuest Two complimentary databases namely ABI/INFORM Dateline and ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry, which are bundled with ProQuest databases, are available for use. ABI/INFORM Dateline contains local and regional business news of large corporations. ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry covers more than 700 publications for trade and industry information. These newly subscribed databases are available at . Open workshops will be arranged for selected electronic resources in due course. New Database Interfaces (i) WiseNews ¼q§lƒ‰„¯ In addition to an option to change the language of the interface, the latest version of WiseNews provides a new feature to check the thesaurus. With the "check thesaurus" feature, it will automatically search with all related terms (in both Chinese and English) assigned by WiseNews editors for the keyword inputted. On the search screen, limiting options such as limit by a specific date range, by a particular category, or by publications from Hong Kong, China or Taiwan, are available for use. (ii) EBSCOhost databases EBSCOhost databases including Academic Search Elite, ERIC, ATLA Religion Database, now have a new interface with enhanced functions such as a redesigned advanced search, search history and a new "folder" feature. This "folder" feature allows users to add items in a personal folder for printing, saving or downloading articles in a batch. (iii) ProQuest databases New features such as ³recent searches² and ³check for local holdings² are now available in ProQuest databases including Academic Research Library, ABI/INFORM Global. The ³check for local holdings² feature enables users to check whether the HKBU Library subscribes to the print resources if full text is not available in the database. Improvement of Library Lighting The Library has carried out a two-part project to improve the lighting situation of Level 7 of the Au Shue Hung Memorial Library with the facilitation and assistance of the Estates Office. Part I of the project, which focused on strengthening the lighting of the front portion of Level 7, has been completed and now provides a much brighter environment for browsing the collection and for locating books by their call numbers. Part II of the project, which will improve the lighting situation of the back portion and over the compact shelving area, is scheduled to be carried out in October after the contractor receives the appropriate parts required for the improvement effort. Library Service Hours The Library has announced the following service hours with effect from September 2, 2002: (i) Main Library Monday to Friday: 8:30 am to 11 pm Saturday: 9 am to 7 pm Sunday: 1 pm to 7 pm Public holidays: closed (ii) Special Collections and Archives Monday to Friday: 9 am to 5 pm Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: closed (iii) Chinese Medicine Library Monday to Tuesday: 10 am to 10 pm Wednesday to Friday: 10 am to 7 pm Saturday: 10 am to 1 pm Sunday and public holidays: closed CCD News The Centre for Child Development (CCD) organised a series of activities during this summer, including: Leadership Training Programme for Exceptionally Gifted Students - Saikung-Guangzhou Action (July 22 to August 17) This programme was co-organised with Gideon Center Limited, a social service organisation, and was part of the Education Department¹s programme, "Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students". It targeted 50 gifted students from secondary four to seven who received three pre- camp training sessions during the programme. Activities included visits to Zhuhai and Guangzhou for a five-day adventure-based leadership training and community service programme. Participants met students from Zhuhai and Guangzhou, conducted street interviews, and visited a home for the elderly, Jinan University and local families. Super Summer 2002 (July 20 to 28) The objective of the Super Summer 2002 programme was to develop children's learning, social and self-care skills, creativity and their social commitment through a variety of courses. Participants included 68 primary three to six students from different schools. They attended elective courses such as ³Discover the Mystery of Life², ³Drama Playground², "Robotics" or ³Magical Mathematics². They acquired "Creative Problem Solving" skills; visited community service organisations; and joined various recreational and team- building activities. The climax was a two-day Outward Bound training course held in Sai Kung West Country Park (Wan Tsai Extension) and in Li Promenade, HKBU campus. Parents joined their children in the training and engaged in activities such as a parent-child march, military games, wild cooking and hiking. Creative Summer Camp (July 15 to 19) This Camp was part of a two-year project, "An Infusion Model of Gifted Education in Learning and Teaching in Primary Schools", funded by the Quality Education Fund. It was designed and organised by CCD and five participatory primary schools on the university campus. Activities aimed to boost students' creativity, learning motivation and higher order thinking through multiple thinking courses. Teachers were also encouraged to design and apply creative activities appropriate for classroom teaching. Participants included 180 primary three gifted students and their teachers from St. Francis of Assisi's English Primary School, Kowloon Methodist School, S.K.H. Lee Siu Keung Primary School, Sun Kei Primary School, and Fung Kai Primary School (PM). In addition to elective courses, a series of experiential and large-scale creative games were also arranged for the students such as ³Astronomical Exploration², ³Characters Interview², ³Wind-power Mobile Race², ³30-second Journey², ³Motional Puzzle², "Chatting about the Universe" and ³Rapid Self-challenge². Inclusive Youth Leadership Training Programme (July 6 to August 11) Co-organised with a social service organisation °V ³Treats² - this event aimed to develop and elevate participants' leadership and social skills through working alongside some of the peers with disabilities. A series of integrated activities were arranged for 25 lower secondary students from mainstream schools and 10 special needs students. These included: (i) Three-day training camp in which participants co- ordinated, designed and prepared for a fun fair on campus and joined a day camp at Tai Mong Tsai; (ii) Fun fair held on campus in which a variety of game and performance counters were prepared for close to 200 children from children's homes, community centres and primary schools; and (iii) ³Adventure Ship², a two-day programme in which participants boarded a junk and received nautical training. Chaplain¹s Office Hosted Retreat for Local Pastors About 50 local pastors and deacons took part in an on- campus retreat recently to develop their leadership in local churches from different denominations. The three-day retreat was hosted by the Chaplain's Office in association with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Montgomery Baptist Association of Alabama. Dr. Herbert Pedersen, an author, pastor, and denominational leader in Texas, delivered the keynote speech. Dr. Donald Sewell, Director of the Texas Partnerships Resource Center of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, gave inspirational messages to the participants. University news will be disseminated through the electronic HKBU e-News and e-Announcements. Since consolidation of posting of the HKBU e-News and e- Announcements in May, it has been viewed as an effective vehicle to keep University members abreast of the latest campus news and happenings in a timely manner. These news items and announcements are broadcast on a daily basis according to need. HKBU e-News covers items related to University-wide functions and activities, staff and student achievements, large-scale academic activities, departmental/student activities of interest to the University community, and media events. From the next academic year, staff publications and paper presentations will be included and released on a monthly basis. Items which are mainly for announcement purpose, such as acting appointments, research grants applications, call for papers, library news, staff appointments/departures and updates of medical benefits, can continue to be issued by the originating unit through the e-Announcement managed by the Information Technology Services Centre.
