Just fucking rudeness. There is a trick involved here. What you do is make the taper an offer he can't refuse. You get a copy of the show. In exchange, you refrain from screaming, "motherfuuuuckerrrr!" at the top of your lungs every few minutes and especially during the quiet spots in the performance. Yeah that's how I thought it was. It is pretty amazing that on one reel-to-reel tape they could get 16 different tracks. It must be a pretty sophisticated physical system - from manufacturing the 16 track tapes to having 16 inputs hit the tape simultaneously - and have it all work. Of course now that everything's digital and on a hard disc, I imagine tapes aren't used any more. > > I'm not sure about the story behind the circulating soundboards, but > they were either from a mix determined on the night of the show > (possibly set at the beginning of the night and never changed) or from > earlier mixdowns from the same 16-track tapes. From what I've heard > about 4/71, the former is more likely. In the case of the '69 shows, > I've heard the latter. However the circulating tapes were done for the April '71 shows, that mix was pretty typical for shows from that time period. Even the mix on 7-2-71 from an FM source has a similar mix. It was the mix that got released on Ladies and Gents that differed radically from all the other circulating soundboards from that time period. I can't wait to hear the mix on the Fillmore West release. I have my fingers crossed that it will be similar to the mix on the (formerly) circulating versions.
