BTW: Kurt, if you think that the attack on Miers from the right was planned by the White House then I think you are incorrect. Much of the right finally openly broke ranks with the White House over it, and as a result Bush has been severely weakened. It's possible that Bush may come back from this -- especially if, say, a there was another terrorist attack for him to exploit -- but he lost a lot of political clout on this one. But he's no deep thinker by > any means. > > -JC Here's the conspiracy I see, and its being conducted right now by Bill Frist. Yesterday senator Norm Coleman (Rep MN and a Frist loyalist) was talking about Miers' old corporate law firm literally selling letters for 50-75k to rich investors seeking IRS approval for a scam tax shelter the IRS later declared illegal. Seems the acounting firm of Ernst & Young (another one of those corrupt and criminal big accounting outfits) had created this scam, and their customers needed letters from some hoity toity law firm to present to the IRS as justification for their involvement in the scam. Miers, who was a co-managing partner of the law firm at the time, had to know about the scam and the selling of the canned form letters since it was bringing in literally millions in income for the firm each year. Coleman, who is chairman of a senate investigations committee, announced he would be seeking documents and answers from Miers on the scam and her involvement in justifying it with $75,000 form letters. Frist immediately gets on the phone with the White House and relays the info. Supposedly he was on the phone several times with them yesterday, telling them new revelations were sinking the nomination with Republican senators. Meanwhile, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas (a freshman who is without a doubt one of the most impressive, influential, and smartest new guys to hit the senate in years and who was been running roughshod over the usual passel of empty suits that dominate the place, and who has been floated as a replacement for Sen. Frist as Senate Majority Leader if Frist's stock troubles balloon into a major scandal---or maybe a replacement just because he's way smarter than Frist who has made quite a few mistakes in his tenure) is sitting in the White House declaring his solid support for Miers and expressing his desire that she be able to tell her story in the hearings. Now we hear that Cornyn's name is being floated for Supreme Court himself (he's a former TX attorney general and one super smart cookie). How'd that happen? I say Frist set him up for defeat on the Miers nomination by getting Coleman to press this tax scam thing, and now he's floating Cornyn for the court to get him out of his way in the Senate, keeping the field clear for Frist to retain his leadership post and run for president if his stock troubles don't derail his chances. Frist doesn't want this super smart conservative nipping at his heels, and knows that Cornyn (or anyone else for that matter) would be honored to be nominated to the court and would simply have to accept. Many of the old line senate warhorses like Ted Stevens, Trent Lott, and most of the Republican empty suits are supporting Nevada empty suit (and my mom's old veterinarian) Sen. John Ensign for a leadership post in which Cornyn has announced he was running for as well as his first foray into leadership electoral politics. Ensign isn't all that bright, and wouldn't be as likely to upset the apple cart anywhere near as much as Cornyn, who is so ambitious he makes some of his colleagues very nervous. After all, he just got to the senate and hasn't paid his years of dues yet like they have. Never underestimate the importance of senate manuevering and seemingly trivial infighting. These guys take things very personally. I say Frist and his henchmen would love to see Cornyn expressing his conservative philosophy on the court instead of in their senate, and engineered Coleman's announcement and Frist's phone calls to both smackdown Cornyn with a major Republican caucus defeat while at the same time possibly clearing the way for the opportunity of a lifetime. The senate works in mysterious ways............ I was wondering the same thing, so I looked it up - the book has a picture of Wilson on the cover, but no Plame. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/078671378X/qid=1130443875/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-8959346-8796668?v=glance&s=books The picture that Kurt is referring to was instead part of a Vanity Fair spread, which the Wilsons now regret doing (the right of course has been using that as mud-throwing ammunition). Seriously, though, I feel a little bit sorry for this poor matron. If Bush had a brain of his own, he'd have known she was in over her head and never would have nominated her. Instead, because he's a nitwit, she gets hung out to dry in the most embarassing way imaginable. I don't know if she plans to stay on as White House counsel, but how can she possibly be effective in that role anymore after she's been pilloried as a lightweight. The only thing Bush accomplished by nominating her was to destroy her career.
