Bush still thinks she's super keen. It was those pesky senators, of both parties, who were left totally unimpressed with this mental and legal midget in their one on one converstaions with her that brought her down. She apparently impressed no one. Bush used her work as White House counsel as the main reason why she should be confirmed. Then he decided no one but him should have any idea what that work was: "It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House -- disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel." Then why'd ya nominate her? Then he tells her she's kaput and issues the standard political statement when a president yanks somebody for his own good: "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers -- and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her." He's really in a box now. The ultra right will demand even more vigorously than usual some religious fanatic. The Dems will plant their feet more firmly in the ground than usual, and we may very well end up with nuclear option / filibuster scenario everyone fears. No, Jerry can't play jazz, doesn't jazz and technically is a pretty rudimentary guitarist. It's a weird thing about some uneducated (musically) Deadheads in that they want to claim that their favorite band plays probably the most difficult music to play in the world, jazz. Jazz musicians generally practice 4-8 hours a day just to keep their chops up. It's a completely different form of music than some rock or folk musician improvising over a static chord. >I'm sure you've checked out some of the > music that came out of Jerry's collaboration with Merl Saunders. They > did a terrific version of "My Funny Valentine". So yeah he could hold > his own. You are such a trouble maker, JC!! *LOL* That's not jazz. Just because one plays a standard doesn't make it jazz. Standards pre-date jazz. > This also might sound like blasphemy to you jazz snobs out there but I > thought that Phish made a nice jazz quartet when they wanted to. Check > out Magilla>The Landlady from "A Picture of Nectar" sometime. You don't need to educate me on Phish. I've seen them in small clubs before you even who they were. They can play a little lounge jazz, but there's no swing there, no inventive reharmonization and it's clear Trey can't play a true jazz solo. Trey definitely has some Metheny influences, but more along the lines of PMG rather than any of Pat's jazz work. > Popular musicians like Jerry Garcia and yes, Phish were a gateway, > primer, or introduction to develop a deeper interest in the masters. > But no one is a dope just because they think Jerry could play classical > or jazz. You just disagree with them is all. No, wrong again. I'm knowledgeable enough about music in that I can *hear* the technical proficiency of a musician. I also have tons of experience in working with world class session musicians. I suppose you'd be amazed to know that there are musicians out there who can listen to a Trey or Garcia solo and mimic it exactly on the spot without transcribing it or having ever heard it before. That's impossible even for the best jazz musician on a Charlie Parker solo or even a Bill Frisell solo, which usually includes insanely difficult harmonic voicings. You gotta understand, I'm talking about technical proficiency. So while I don't care much for Trey's work per se and think Garcia is one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard, it's clear that Trey has the superior chops. Garcia was a great musician because of his spirit, individuality and the unique voice he brought to his instrument. Not because of his massive chops or harmonic sophistication. Look at BB King. The guy plays plays about 3 notes most of time...7 at most. Would you consider him great? I would. Now that's greatness. A guy that can't even barely play a chord but becomes a legend playing a few licks over and over. -JC ------------------------------ From: "scarletbgonias@hotmail.com" Subject: Re: shes gone Date: 27 Oct 2005 09:01:02 -0700 Well, O'Connor has stated that she'll stay until her replacement is confirmed, but just how long will she wait? ------------------------------ From: "dyrewlf" Subject: Re: what political Blogs do you read? Over the course of the time it will take you to use 1,000 discs, is it really worth it considering what you're gambling with? I would say that reading this: http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-4 should be the determining factor on whether to use these.
