I always loved the spectacle of all those Deadheads in Vegas. So I always had a blast at Vegas Dead, even when the band wasn't on their game. And I do recall some high points from that run, at least relatively speaking - that Dew and the Truckin', at least, were memorable (in a positive way) for me. I wouldn't be at all suprised if it didn't hold up on the tapes however. My very last show was two weeks later at Shoreline. That's the first and only time I left before the end of a Dead show - they were playing poorly, and Jerry was MIA - it was too depressing. Of course had I known that that'd be the last show I'd see then I would have stayed until the end. I didn't see the show last week, but the day after Vassar passed on I caught Dawg at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley where he debuted "Blues for Vassar". (IIRC it was the debut, anyway.) Before he played the song Grisman explained that at a gig with Vassar and Tony Rice in December he and Vassar played together for the last time, and that after that gig he penned "Blues for Vassar" - a beautiful and moving tune. I guess it must be the passing of time, but I picture Jerry as being relatively healthy at the Vegas shows. I think it's a combination of the crack he made about the heat stricken people up front, "pile 'em up here, we're collecting them," and the vigorous Dew that night. I could be mistaken though. Come on, man. Of course you don't have to answer questions about your work history. And they don't have to hire you. You can get away with anything if you don't get questioned about it. The point is, do you want to take the risk? Several people have assumed that by my pointing this factor out, I am lobbying for something one way or the other. That is wrong. I don't give a shit one way or the other what someone does ... they can make their own decisions about that. But failure to take all the considerations into account is simply making a decision with partial information. And it isn't a matter of paranoia, either, Steve-san. And the fact is, a gap in work history can be a problem. I didn't say *will* ... I said CAN. Now, if ya want my personal position, it is as follows: never, never work for someone who would test for drugs if being clean is unrelated to job performance. If they disrespect your right to privacy in that fashion, it is likely they will disrpespect you in some other fashion as well.
