I don't know. I need to read up on md5 files. But if I'm doing a straight copy of an shn or flac disk, aren't I just copying the existing md5 file? That md5 file on the copy disc, it seems, wouldn't tell me anything about the copy disc, it would apply only to the data on the original disc. > ......It very frowned upon to reFLAC or reSHN a file after it has been > decoded please don't do that ..it is redundant and can create errors No I'm not interested in doing that. I'm just trying to make sure that the copy I make of a flac or shn disc is the same as the original shn or flac disc. And also that the audio bits I'm extracting off my hard drive (after I convert shn files to wav files that will go on a blank CD) is an exact copy of what's on my hard drive. If EAC is needed to extract data accurately off a CD, it would seem a similarly accurate program would be needed to extract data off a data disc or hard drive. They've been trading slots on these two-night stands, so you'll probably see each band play the part of warmup act on successive nights. I saw 'em Saturday night (second night of two at the Showbox) and moe. opened with an acoustic set of all things. It was still LOUD, but I was surprised. Then Mule came out and cranked it up to eleven friggin' HUNDRED. If you think 'The Dead' (Grateful, and apparently otherwise) haven't done anything 'decent' since 1993 and you continued to buy a lot of tickets anyway then yeah, that's pretty pathetic. Many people don't share your 'nothing decent' opinion however, including me (IMO many 'Dead' shows have been decent, even at times great; esp. some P&F shows). Whatever works. EAC is for extracting audio files. The concept is that there is some data verification taking place with respect to the transfer between the disc that is being extracted and the drive that the file is being moved to. Thus, you have an "exact analog copy" of the material. For the most part, md5 files have historically accompanied the compressed data files. The mkw software can use the md5 file to determine if the data was transferred identically. If there is a copy error in either the new data file or the new md5 file, then the verification software would alert you that the file was not okay. Thus the md5 file tells you exactly how good the copy of the shn or flac disc is ... that is its purpose. We also now see md5 files for the related wavs that would be decoded from the encoded data files ... so it is possible to determine if you got a good decode ... or at least a decode that was identical to the wav decode of the person that generated the md5 file for the wavs. R. ------------------------------ From: "Richard Morris" Subject: Re: audio extraction questions Date: Tue, 18 Oct 2005 16:56:42 -0700 "Steve Terry" wrote in message news:dj3vga$2nn4$1@news.iquest.net... > > "Bill" wrote in message: > >> What's the SHN plug for? > > I think it allows you to play shn files without ever having to convert > them to wav (audio). > ayup ...
