I've been told that North is less > crowded and just as nice. Anyone confirm? First off, if you're a AAA member, they have some great medium scale maps .... get some before you go or stop by a AAA office while. I think the ones I'm talking about are still called "Section", (AAA keeps changing the names and exactly what they cover), "Region" and even "County" maps. Definitely pick up the "Bay and Mountain Section" and "San Francisco Bay Region". The general California map has a nice panel "San Francisco - Monterey Area". Going south, also get "Monterey Bay Region". Going north, "North Bay Counties" is the perfect map, covering SF to above Fort Bragg, if it's still available. Also, "Mendocino and Sonoma Coast Region", at least for a longer northern drive. North or South? Both nice, and which is best depends somewhat on how much time you have, the weather, preference for driving or getting out and walking around (or even camping). Either way, especially the northern coast, you might want to consider driving north along the coast, and swinging inland to go south; it can save some time, the sun is at your back while on the coast where you really care, and as DG said, you've got the buffer lane between you and the cliff edge ;-). One nice loop going south would be to take I280 out of the city, south to 85, to 17 which takes you southwest into Santa Cruz. This is all freeway, but much of it is pleasantly scenic. Then north on Rte 1, back into SF. Especially on a weekday, you'll feel pretty far away from it all most of the way from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay. Be sure to stop at some of the beaches north of Santa Cruz; you could picnic there, or there's a nice restaurant in Davenport at the inn. You might want to check out Ano Nuevo State Reserve, with a colony of elephant seals http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=523 This loop by itself could be a half-day trip, or you could extend it by going south from Santa Cruz to Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur. To make it a bit more interesting on the way down inland, you could get off the freeway 280 at Rte 92 (sign to Half Moon Bay), then in a bit take a left to go south on Rte 35, Skyline Boulevard. This is good road, very scenic, 50-55 limit most of the way until Rte 9, at which point you could take 9 all the way to Santa Cruz (slow) or continue on straight south to hook up to 17 (this can get a tad confusing, so keep alert). ------------------------------ From: Joe Subject: Re: Open Apology to the RMGD Women Date: 17 Oct 2005 17:01:29 GMT leftie wrote: > Joe wrote: > > If the thunder don't get you then the lightening will. > "lightening" ?
