So much for swift justice... ========== BC-NA-A&E-MUS--US-PhilSp 10-13 0385 Defense tries to get Spector's incriminating statements tossed LOS ANGELES (AP) Music producer Phil Spector was suffering withdrawal symptoms from seven prescription drugs when he told police that he had shot and killed an actress at his mansion in 2003, his defense attorneys argue in court papers. Attorneys representing Spector, known for creating rock music's ``wall of sound'' recording technique in the 1960s, are trying to get a judge to throw out his incriminating statements. In a recently filed defense brief, attorney Bruce Cutler claimed that Spector, 64, ``was experiencing symptoms of withdrawal from his medications, which could include hallucinations, forgetfulness, serious fatigue, and/or slurring.'' Police refused or ignored his requests for his medication after they took him into custody at his home, Cutler said. The brief was obtained Wednesday by the Los Angeles Times. The medications were for treating depression, seizures, stomach acid, migraines and pain, according to defense motions. One was an antibiotic. The defense on Thursday also issued a statement saying that Cutler ``adamantly denies that Mr. Spector either shot anyone at his home or that he stated he had done so.'' Prosecutors, who have until Oct. 21 to formally respond to the court filing, declined to comment on Cutler's claims. Spector faces life in prison if convicted of killing actress Lana Clarkson. Spector has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is free on $1 million (euro830,000) bail. Clarkson starred in Roger Corman's cult film classic ``Barbarian Queen.'' She was working as a hostess at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip and went home from there with Spector the night she died. According to transcripts of a police interrogation, Spector initially apologized for accidentally shooting Clarkson but later said she had committed suicide. Defense lawyers also want Superior Court Judge Larry P. Fidler to exclude evidence of 14 guns seized from Spector's home and the record producer's past misdemeanor firearms convictions. Fidler ruled in May that he would allow testimony from four women who said Spector had threatened them with guns. The judge has said he expects trial to begin in January. I work at the hospital where prisoners from King County Jail are taken. We get prisoners, even dangerous felons, day in and day out. There are always people in red jumpsuits in the hospital. You don't need a judge to free you to get medical attention. Prisoners aren't freed to be brought to the hospital. In fact prisoners are brought to the hospital handcuffed, shackled and are continuously guarded by KCJ officers. We get guys coming in for simple crap as having an infected hangnail, so this doesn't make sense. Tangled Up In Blue (12:20) (JGB, 8/8/90, The Warfield, San Francisco) My MO: I listened to as many versions of each song as I could download. That meant roughly 140 versions of Simple Twist and anywhere from 20-75 versions of most of the others. I eliminated those that didn't pass a minimum threshhold of listenability and then gave full listens to all the other versions. My selections were based on whatever whims I had at the time. Basically, though, vocals were usually a minor consideration. Sound quality was a priority but not that it was what informed by final choices. The only thing I knew beforehand was that the 8/8/90 Tangled Up In Blue would be included. It is my favorite Jerry performance in any incarnation and the last five minutes are the greatest guitar solo I've ever heard from anybody, anywhere, anytime. It's also what got the idea in my head to do this. The only omission was All Along The Watchtower, which was played once (10/25/87) and does not circulate. I chose the better part of valor and decided against using the version released as part of the Pure Jerry series. Fully recognizing that I couldn't be all things to all people, I hope this works as most things for most people. As I was dealing with 19 different tracks from 18 different sources (mostly aud's), matching levels and segueing were somewhat problematic. I have tried to minimize this as best I could, or at least as gently as possible. Thanks to: Tol, who singularly made this possible.
