What's happening in Iraq right now really isn't a war. The war part of this whole affair lasted a few weeks or so. What's going on now is an insurgent rebellion against an occupying force, with a few outside terrorist agitators thrown into the mix. Bush & Co. would love us all to continue believing that it's a war so they can push their "patriotic" bullshit excuses for staying there. Reyes National Seashore. I was backseat shotgun, letting somebody else do the driving. Me? On the right. Window seat. We were heading down Park Presidio nearing Golden Gate Park when my eyes caught this beautiful car. Silver. Convertable. Low-slung. Sharp edges. Looked to me like a Lamborghini. Costs more'n my house, no doubt. Well, I was oooohing and aaaaahing the car as anybody would. Until I noticed who was in the driver's seat. Yes, our own Reddy Kilowatt, Phil Lesh hisself! Now, this was late Sunday afternoon heading along one of the main routes through San Fransicso from the bridge. It was Fleet Week. Tiger Woods had just won a golf tournament nearby. So believe me when I tell you that the traffic was fuckin' heavy. Anyway, we were in the left lane, and Phil was in the right. This gave his car and ours plenty of time to pass each other, slow down and lose space, pass each other again while going 2 mph down the road. The point being that I got a very good look at the driver. Even with ballcap on his head, it was obviously Phil. I tapped on my windshield to get his attention, but to no avail. I'm sure that he simply didnt' see me through the tinted window and was NOT deliberately ignoring me. He was driving with some guy in the passenger seat. Dunno who it was. We continued south to 19th Street, and they turned right on Fulton. I was in a chartreuse microbus, with a "freaks for Jesus" sticker on one side of the back window, and a Sweetbac Productions logo on the other. Brett Meisner was passed out in the back. I followed Phil and his "associate" for 3 hours. Meisner was NO help. At one point they drove through a Jack in the Box, and with the special microphone we'd planted on Phil's car I could hear Phil break into Box of Rain, with the lyrics changed to "Jack A Box of Rain". The crew was unimpressed. Phil got the two tacos, his friend something on a ciabatta. They both had chocolate shakes. If Meisner hadn't woken up and reminded me of a previous engagement, we might still be trailing our tall lanky friend. If anyone wants the frequency to pick up the infrared homing device we left in his wheel well, let me know.
