It may have also been the last. Fuggetabout the coffins, we do't even see live soldiers anymore. When we were rolling through the country at light speed the embedded reporters were everywhere, showing us everything. Now that we have a drip drip drip of deaths caused by car bombings, small firefights, and vehicle accidents, the reporters are nowhere to be found. > Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911 was very poignant about the type > of 18-28 year old that's being recruited. The poor, sometimes > the least educated. The ones with the least amount of choices > and opportunities. He was wrong about who is in the military and who is fighting and dying. Sure, minorities and the underprivileged are over-represented in the armed forces, but most of the ones fighting and dying are what I think of as true believing volunteers. Drive through any small town in the country and look at all the "support our troops" magnets on the pickups. Those magnets aren't on those pickups because they support Jose from the barrio and Andwan from the hood. They're for their own kids. Its these rural, evangelical Christian, anti-knowledge, willing to believe anything they're told kids that make up most of whose getting it over there. Listen to the Christian TV and radio stations; they're in Iraq doing god's work and spreading Christianity to a populace thirsty for the love of Jeebus. My little town has several combat deaths alone. This dinky one horse farm / ranching / logging town with more churches than apartments. Seems like every week the magnet covered pickups are on the road to the memorial service for the latest combat death. They support our troops, ya see. Don't get me wrong; it isn't rich kids dying over there. And I sure don't want to see any kids, even the true believers, losing their legs or lives. But it was these rural and small town people who gave Bush the election; it was them who supported and still support the war, and a lot of them are the ones doing the dying. That most of the country either doesn't care or opposes their views doesn't seem to bother these people. They think its something that has to be done because its god's work. They don't seem to mind the dying all that much, its just the price the "good people" have to pay for "freedom". If that's supporting our troops, I guess I don't. If these people want to carry the weight of the world on their backs while being duped and lied to and think its all for Jeebus, I guess all I can say is they asked for it.
