I've never associated 'cheap' with the lack of power to sway. In this context I associate 'cheap' with pandering, and in my view this presentation is not pandering - in my view it's not playing to peoples' fears. In any event, many people don't think through their positions. I think a lot of people tune the fact out that 2,000 Americans have died - and more are dying every day - in a war that we were sold to under false pretenses because it doesn't impact them directly and/or because they don't want to acknowledge that their government lied to them about why we went to war. For some of these people this type of presentation, as opposed to commonplace numbers, might have some sway. > It's not an argument worthy of persuading really. > People die in war. That's pretty much a given, right? Yes. However people also tune things out that are commonplace, and the fact that US soldiers are dying every day in Iraq has become commonplace. People also tune numbers out. So the fact that US soldiers are dying in Iraq every day isn't very prominent in many peoples' minds, especially since these days the media isn't covering it as much since it's so commonplace. By showing the faces of dead soldliers (not just the numbers), and by juxtiposing that with the lies used to put these people in harms' way to begin with, I think this presentation might be effective in driving home to some people that other people are dying, and that they are dying because our leaders lied to us (another thing that is so commonplace these days that many people have tuned it out). No doubt the presentation won't 'play' to Bush loyalists, but it might to some who are less political and who often tune these types of things out. That said, of course any single presentation like this does very little. Just as any single protest does very little. Just as any single op-ed column does very little. Just as any single vote does very little. Individually all of things things and more usually do very little. But they can also add up. Fascism: 1 : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition 2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control (Webster.com) The type of political system that Osama et al want to install is one that exalts nation above the individual, and also has strong autocratic or dictatorial control. And of course the system of government they want to install is also one that embraces and enforces a severe fundamentalist interpretation of Islam. They are thus, in my view, both fascists and Islamists - and so in my view the label "Islamofascist" for them is accurate.
