It was made by the graphic artist Neil Gaiman and directed by Dave McKean.I had never heard of Neil Gaiman but my son wanted to see it so we made the trek into NYC. The press blurb for the film describes it as "...a visual and psychological menagerie of dreamscape, nightmares and otherworldly creatures." This movie is highly original in its creation of a surreal dreamworld and visually dazzling. Excellent music and the lead actress,15 year old Stephanie Leonidas is totally engaging. This is the best picture I have seen in a very long time. It is in limited release so do catch it if you get a chance.Much better to see it in a theatre than wait for the DVD. Highly recommended. They spent a lot of time talking about this secret society at Yale called the "Skull and Bones." Here's a good article on it. http://www.parascope.com/articles/0997/skullbones.htm They also discuss the "Bilderbergs" and the "Tri-lateral Commission." I knew that things like this existed in the past, but I had no idea they were still around. What I see on the internet here seems to indicate that the history of these groups is pretty well documented. As in, they are not made up. George W. Bush is a member of this "Skull and Bones" group. He admits to it, but can say no more on the subject. John Kerry is also a member. The program and the literature talk a lot about this "Hegellian" philosophy, and "Hegellian Dialectics." http://nord.twu.net/acl/dialectic.html: "Hegel's theory is basically that mankind is merely a series of constant philosophical conflicts. Hegel was an idealist who believed that the highest state of mankind can only be attained through constant ideological conflict and resolution. The rules of the dialectic means mankind can only reach its highest spiritual consciousness through endless self-perpetuating struggle between ideals, and the eventual synthesizing of all opposites. Hegel's dialectic taught all conflict takes man to the next spiritual level. But in the final analysis, this ideology simply justifies conflict and endless war. It is also the reasoning behind using military power to export an illogical version of freedom and false democratic ideals." The theory of the conspiracists follows that all conflict in American history falls under this umbrella of "synthetic opposites" created by the ruling class to essentially keep the masses occupied and engaged in a false dialogue. It's a fairly interesting theory. The very creepiest thing, I think, is that while George W. Bush claims to be a Christian he actually holds a membership in this secret society. I can't think of a better example of a "false idol." It's as if he's just using the church to get people into another two-sided dialogue. Christian v. Not. I can't honestly believe that his faith is true especially while he's a member of some society he can't speak of. Very creepy. Maybe it's all crap, but it's fairly interesting crap. *sigh* -Effty ------------------------------ From: nbndtrain@yahoo.com Subject: Favorite Space Date: 4 Oct 2005 12:39:41 -0700 I typically FF Space, but am sometims up for a good one on long drives or working on the computer. Date: Tue, 4 Oct 2005 16:34:41 -0400 Dave Matthews Band rally the troops at Red Rocks By Deborah Wilker Tue Oct 4, MORRISON, Colo. There have been so many Gulf Coast fundraisers in recent weeks, it seems some have just run together. But one stands apart -- not so much for the money it raised (though the $1.5 million haul was certainly tidy) but for the integrity that fathered it and the manner in which it ultimately played out. When Dave Matthews Band unexpectedly added a fourth night to its long sold-out, tour-closing stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre last month, some in the industry thought they were nuts. Full-fledged concerts aren't just announced, staffed and sold in a matter of days. Yet when asked to make it happen, nobody balked -- and nobody got paid. Not the city of Denver, which operates this renowned venue and waived the rent. Not Ticketmaster, which usually requires several weeks' lead time to get an on-sale together. Not the food workers, who cooked and served all day. Not the cops, the box office employees, the merchandisers, ushers, truckers, crew or security staff. All not only came forward on their own in unprecedented numbers, they covered their own expenses. "Every single group I can think of just came to the table," says Coran Capshaw, the band's manager. "That's the real story, that it goes down to everyone. Certainly these companies stepped up, but in a lot of cases it was the individuals, too." And it was not a quick day. The show alone ran nearly six hours, beginning with Australia's John Butler Trio, then a full performance by the Neville Brothers, before DMB took the stage at 9 p.m. to play for three hours. A three-hour performance is never easy even under ideal circumstances, but coming at the conclusion of a tour, on a fourth consecutive night, at a stamina-sapping 6,400-foot elevation -- it had to be a challenge. Yet there was, inevitably, not a hint of weariness among the guys -- no shortcuts, only the usual muscular, all-out job -- who performed a deft mix of earlier material and sexy new stuff from their current multiplatinum release, "Stand Up." If ever a font of good vibrations existed in rock 'n' roll, these guys are it. But it was also the fans who told the story -- thousands of them who had set vacations around the Red Rocks stand -- and who, without blinking, ate the airline ticketing penalties; changed work schedules and other personal arrangements; and then bought out the fourth show in a record 90 seconds or so. Of course, DMB loyalists don't consider any of that a sacrifice, and it's hardly a chore for anyone to linger an extra day at this breathtaking park. But what it says really is that after 10 exceedingly strong years in the marketplace and more than $450 million in concert grosses, there's been almost no erosion in the land of Dave, a stat few acts of any era can match. Much of this success is driven by the tremendous kinship among Matthews' fans, many of whom tend to address one another as "new friends" at the start of every show. That the band's well-established charity -- Bama Works Foundation -- has long distributed millions of dollars to numerous causes no doubt fuels this vibe, as well as the willingness of all kinds of people to pitch in. While poor TV ratings affirm that several Gulf fundraisers haven't resonated with Americans (for various reasons), at Red Rocks there were no false notes. "Fortunately, we were out on the road and we could do something meaningful," Capshaw says. "It's just what they believe in. They're good people who play great music." bbb wrote: Anyone here go, or are we to old for that kind of music? ; ) booie......... .. .. .. Kimock (left) was a favorite of the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia. Instrumental rock isn't for everyone, which may be part of its appeal. If anything, the "insider effect" can make the thoughtful sonic tangents the music is capable of even more meaningful to those who really care. Leave the terse verse/chorus/verse stuff to others, and take us on a long and winding journey, baby! Anyway, a leading proponent of the jam-happy form is the Steve Kimock Band, whose namesake guitarist gets compared a lot to late, great improvisatory string-bender Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. And for good reason. Garcia once plugged Kimock as his "favorite unknown guitar player." The Steve Kimock Band's new instrumental rock record is "Eudemonic," which the disc's liner notes say means "producing happiness and well-being." But no singing. "I'd like to sing more, but I'm really very shy, especially as a singer, and I have difficulty singing without getting kind of choked up," Kimock says in a recent interview on jambands.com. "It's emotional. I do the same thing when I read poetry out loud, I start to cry and stuff. It's very embarrassing, but eventually I'll get it together."
