The Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City Nevada just may be the first place that ever featured a lysergically altered crowd dancing wildly to a psychedelic rock band, complete with a psychedelic light show. That band would be The Charlatans, dressed in their western / victorian / 20's finery, also lysergically altered. In early 1965. Other bands featured at the Saloon included Big Brother and the Holding Company, the PH Factor Jug Band, the Great Society, and the curiously named Final Solution. The DVD features footage of a Red Dog reunion held in the mid 90's, and lots of interviews with some folks some of the older heads here may recognize: Family Doggers Luria, Ellen Harmon, and Alton Kelley, the Red Doggers themselves including Travus T. Hipp and super singer (later of Stoneground) Lynne Hughes, surviving Charlatans, and various assorted early freaks who later spent most of their time in the Haight. One of the extras is an interview with superstar photog Jim Marshall, who sounded like a drunken Wavy Gravy. The gun talk is priceless (every head simply HAD to have one). Some early Jerry Slick footage of the Charlatans reahearsing is included, as well as some snippets of various very early stuff from bands that made the scene. Bill Hamm describes the first ever "light machine" that he put together for the saloon. No actual concert footage from the Red Dog, as everyone was occupied with things besides documenting history at the time. If you're old and want to remember, or if you just missed all this as I did and want to see what you missed, or if you're young and curious about how this scene began, check it out. The GD are mentioned many times and many stills are included, but no GD tuneage.
