Measuring a mere 1.21 meters (four feet) and weighing a slight 24 kilograms (52 pound), Haldar now near to retirement age says he has been malnourished all his life. ``My mother was very weak. So I am. I am unable to work in the field,'' Halder said in an interview in the Sunderbans village of Pakurtala, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) south of the eastern Indian city of Kolkata in the Ganges River delta. ``I have hardly had the money to buy good food or visit a doctor. I have been suffering from malnutrition since my childhood. Because of his poor health and stick-like physique, he added, neighbors had said he was ``born to play a ghost.'' He took to the idea and his reputation began to spread through the myriad islands that make up the Sunderbans. ``Wherever I go children call me 'Uncle Ghost' and peep at me through windows,'' a smiling Haldar said. ``Women and children are even scared of going out at night in case they meet me.'' His friend Sunil Chakraborty helps him perform on candle-lit stages in Sunderban villages yet to be reached by electricity and where people prefer to confine themselves in their homes after sundown. He says it takes him only 10 to 15 minutes to do his makeup and transform his emaciated self into a ghost-like creature mainly by painting his sunken face, protruding ribs and skeletal limbs with soot. ``I see it as acting,'' said Haldar, adding that while he roams from village to village scaring the daylights out of people, his wife and son work in the fields. ``I have no regrets. Sometimes I enjoy it,'' he said of his spooky profession. He mainly does his shows during the festive seasons and earns 40 to 50 rupees (about a dollar) a time, said his wife Malati, adding resignedly, ``But he is addicted to smoking hemp and spends all his money on this habit.'' Lighting up a hemp cigarette in front of his wife, Haldar acknowledged his love of the herb. ``(But) when I indulge myself in smoking hemp and playing chess, I wonder if I am a real ghost or a human being,'' he said philosophically. A doctor at a local government-run hospital said Haldar had likely suffered acute malnutrition as a child which had resulted in hormonal imbalances. str/bpz India-ghost-offbeat AFP 020124 GMT OCT 05 ------------------------------ From: "RomanII" Crossposted-To: rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1960s,rec.arts.movies.current-films,soc.culture.greek Subject: Re: chantal up for adoption, limo busines is fycked up Date: 4 Oct 2005 04:47:30 -0700 I suggest you buy a monkey retarded turk, it is all right for you to wish death on unborn children-remember your post about Gogu's baby, remember that you fucking sick cocksucker turd? In the wake of its final masterpiece Volunteers, drummer Spencer Dryden quit, singer Marty Balin took a sabbatical, and the guitar-and-bass tandem of Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady increasingly devoted themselves to the lysergic blues of Hot Tuna. Left without a group, Paul Kantner and Grace Slick began working on Blows against the Empire, their most adventurous outing to date. As is evident in the feverish anger of the opening track Mau Mau (Amerikon), they recognized that their initial battle to oust the establishment had been lost, though they also were not yet willing to concede the war. Sure, Blows against the Empire's storyline revolved around the idea of a gang of freedom-seeking hippies who hijack a government-controlled spacecraft in order to colonize the universe -- "Wave goodbye to Amerika/Say hello the garden," Kantner and Slick sing in unison on Let's Go Together. As is the case with all good science-fiction tales, however, the underlying theme was based upon the notion of altering the realities of an Earth-bound existence. Drawing upon the works of author Robert Heinlein, the duo essentially charted a course not only for their lives and their band, but also for the entire countercultural movement. This is an excerpt. I just played part of the first set and the Scarlet>Fire through drums on some relatively cheap Sennheiser headphones and a Sony discman on the train this morning. The recording sounded like it had potential on a good system, but it did not jump our at me as being a "reference" audience recording. There was a lot of Phil and it was not distorted, so I certainly liked that. The vocals and other instruments were clear as well. There was a bit of chatter, but I guess that is to be expected for an FOB with cardiods (aren't they?) and a very drunken update NY crowd. So I'll continue to give you the benefit of the doubt until I can play it a few times through my home system -- McIntosh amp & preamp, ADCOM CD player and Joseph Audio RM 25's. Thanks for recommending a good show, dude. The bad thing is that I hold grudges for at least a month and your time is not up yet, phucker. Here is "mr. rapidan" to me after I tried to defend a friend on *another newsgroup* for being unfairly attacked. Out of nowhere this heady person (rapidan) comes back at me with this--"Got no bubble to burst. You're a creepy desperate companionship trollling whackjob and it's been evident since your first appearance."
