Larry ------------------------------ From: "Dylanstubs" Subject: Booing at GD shows? Date: 27 Sep 2005 06:55:34 -0700 The one and only time I ever heard booing at a GD related show was Garcia/Kahn at the Beverly Theatre in Beverly Hills, CA. Jerry's mic was a little too "live" and picked up his heavy breathing, even when he backed off to play solos. It was not a good set. After six songs they walked off and the announcer comes on and says "Jerry says that's all", and there erupted a rather strong booing which segued nicely into a loud Bullshit chant. They came back for 3 more songs. It's noted on The Jerry Site as Set 2, but it was really more like forced encores. The two shows in one night thing was probably not a good idea. 5-31-1985 Beverly Theater, Beverly Hills, CA - Early Show Set 1 Run For The Roses I've Been All Around This World Friend Of The Devil > Deep Elem Blues Simple Twist Of Fate Ripple Set 2 Jack-A-Roe Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie > When I Paint My Masterpiece ------------------------------ From: wyeknot Subject: Re: The Ancestral Mansion Date: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 10:22:40 -0400 Richard Morris wrote: > Brisket and a beer, eh? S.D. was really, really pissed off about Manning. I think the local media had people all fired up ahead of time, and there was definitely an element of civic pride about it. "Eli Sucks" shirts had been selling like hotcakes well in advance of the game according to the L.A. Times sports section, which ran a story on Sun. morning about how keyed up the town was. The stadium seemed to be working the crowd as well. The announcer mentioned "Giants quarterback Eli Manning" at least 10 time during the game and each time the crowd went nuts with the Eli Sucks thing. I don't think Drew Brees's name was anounced more than one or two times. Even on the big TV's at either end of the stadium, they managed to put Manning's picture and stats up a couple of times during the game - they didn't show anyone else's face. Not to make excuses for some seriously nasty people, but I'm pretty sure if I showed up at the next Charger home game in the away team's colors, it'd be cool. Yeah, unfortunately the anarchist fuck-wads in bandanas and black will almost assuredly be there, to exploit the scene for their own idiotic ends (which, as near as I can tell, amounts to a bizarre need to break busines windows and injure or kill cops). At least they are small in number - maybe a couple of dozen of so - so provided that the rest of the protest is orderly and isn't dedicated to shutting down downtown SF the cops will have the resources keep those idiots under relative control. > > If however it's one of these "let's shut down the city" type-things > > then you can count me out - IMO the hundreds of thousands of dollars > > that SF has to spend to respond to those types of things would be much > > better spent elsewhere. > > Ah, but then there are those folks who think forcing another community to > spend its scarce tax dollars restraining and cleaning up after protests is > of less importance than their self-indulgence, just so long as it's not > *their* tax dollars and the broken glass and cracked skulls are all in > another county. The shutting down and cracking skulls isn't taken with enthusiasm in many quarters of SF either. Unfortunately for SF, sometimes there's just too many non-SFers who come to SF to do that sort of thing to stop them. Hurricane evacuations caused miles of traffic jams in Texas, and a bus filled with elderly people exploded when an oxygen tank caught fire, incinerating at least 24 passengers. In the wake of Hurricane Rita, which damaged a number of oil refineries, President George W. Bush called on Americans to conserve gas. "I mean," he said, "people just need to recognize that the storms have caused disruption and that if they're able to maybe not drive when they--on a trip that's not essential, that would helpful." It was reported that President Bush, exhausted from job stress, was back on the bottle. "Stop, George!" Laura Bush allegedly yelled as she walked in on him drinking straight whiskey. -- Paul Ford Permanent URL for this column: http://harpers.org/WeeklyReview2005-09-27.html General URL for the latest Weekly Review: http://www.harpers.org/MostRecentWR.html Copyright 2005 Harper's Magazine Foundation * * * * * * * * * __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
