Personally, I think the guy has slipped over the years in a major way, but I also think he's purposely simplified his playing for his own reasons, a choice I don't agree with. But I think he gels with the Dead environment very well based on the Phil & Phriends (were soundboards of these ever release?). And you're right, technically and from a skill standpoint, there's really no one better in the jam band scene. He is very, very fragile. Substantial impairment of one side, to the extent that it is very difficult for him to walk, and he cannot use one hand on the keyboard or for much else, I think. While he sat at the keyboard on both occasions for one song, he was assisted by a second player on both nights. To say that he was playing, with one hand, is charitable, at best. I think his stroke happened a while back, and I don't know whether he is improving or not. The reception that he received on both occasions was overwhelmingly warm, which was gratifying and moving to see.
