Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2005 06:00:03 -0400 About 100,000 anti-war protesters rally in capital By Mark Memmott, USA TODAY WASHINGTON =97 Three days of anti-war activities, including the largest such protest here since the war in Iraq began in March 2003, are scheduled to end today with what organizers hope will be peaceful arrests at the White House gates. At the same time, a smaller group that supports U.S. policy on Iraq plans to finish its three days of counterdemonstrations with meetings on Capitol Hill with like-minded lawmakers. Both sides are led by family members of American troops killed in Iraq. District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Chief Charles Ramsey estimated that Saturday's anti-war crowd numbered at least 100,000. Protesters gathered on the National Mall and on the Ellipse outside the White House. Led by Cindy Sheehan, whose son Army Spc. Casey Sheehan was killed by enemy fire in April 2004 in Iraq, the crowd marched around the White House. A similar-sized crowd gathered in January 2003. There were other, smaller protests Saturday in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, London and other cities. President Bush was in Texas and Louisiana during the weekend. In August, Sheehan and her supporters camped out for nearly four weeks near Bush's ranch in Texas. Saturday, she told the crowd the country is being led by an "out-of-control, criminal government ... that condones torture." "We mean business, George Bush," Sheehan said, "and we're going to go to Congress and we're going to ask them, 'How many more of other people's children are you willing to sacrifice for the lies?' And we're going to say, 'Shame on you. Shame on you for giving him the authority to invade Iraq.' " In the crowd, William Liggett of Berryville, Va., said he joined the demonstration because the president's "policy in the Middle East is really against the best interests of America." Iraq is splitting into warring factions, said Liggett, 72, and the president is "going to create a much bigger problem than existed previously." While those protesters were raising their voices, so was a group of people who support the president's policy. Diane Ibbotson of Albion, Ill., lost her son, Army Cpl. Forest Jostes, in the same battle that killed Casey Sheehan. She was among members of 30 "gold star" families who support Bush's policy and said in a meeting with reporters that Sheehan does not speak for everyone who has lost a loved one. Ibbotson said Sheehan is "at best ... a woman overwrought with grief. ... When you call the commander in chief a terrorist, bringing into question the integrity of our leader, you call into question the integrity and character of the United States armed forces." Another Bush supporter, Mike Broomhead of Phoenix, lost his brother, Army Staff Sgt. Thomas Broomhead, in May 2003. "I am not here to change the mind of the protesters. I am not here to change Cindy Sheehan's mind," he said. "I don't have a problem with their opposition. I have a problem with their method, and I have a problem with their vitriol." On Sunday, about 400 people gathered for a rally on the National Mall to support Bush's policy on Iraq,, the Associated Press reported. Today, anti-war protesters plan to march to the White House in the early afternoon. Members of one group =97 Clergy and Laity Concerned About Iraq =97 plan to demand a meeting with the president and to be arrested for refusing to leave the White House gates. Ibbotson, Broomhead and other Bush supporters plan to be at the Capitol to urge lawmakers to support the war effort. bbb wrote: It looks like more people want the war to stop. Fair enough, and not all that surprising that Trey might not of jelled with the environment and setup at this show. But I was taking exception to the general statement that he lacks playing skills. According to the source, President Bush was inconsolable, and reduced to tears by this news. The only question that he was able to ask through his tears was "Don, how many is a Brazilian?" A good guitar tech should be able to fiqure out > the problem in a hurry. What he said... When you bring it back to the store, you might consider letting the salesperson know that the buzzing is unacceptable, and that if their repair guy isn't able to fix it, you're going to want your money back so you can find one elsewhere. Doing that will give them some incentive to get it right the first time instead of stringing you along w/minimal results until after the warranty's expired. I'm not familiar w/Epiphone mandolins, but if they're anything like their guitars, you'd be better off returning it and saving up a few extra bucks to get a better brand/model. Buying an Epiphone guitar is akin to buying generic food at the supermarket -- it won't kill you, but it's not going to taste too good either. ------------------------------ From: "volkfolk" Subject: Re: 3 Brazilian killed in Iraq, Bush inconsolable Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2005 09:23:39 -0400 "The Lord of Eltingville" wrote in message news:dh8pdc01pe0@news1.newsguy.com... > volkfolk wrote: >> >> (Associated Press-Washington DC) >> >> White House sources revealed today that during a recent cabinet meeting >> Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld reported that three Brazilian >> soldiers >> were killed in Iraq yesterday. I'm no "computer expert", but since this is a math question and I'm bored I'll take a stab at ballparking it: Ass-uming a 4:3 aspect ratio, the hypotenuse (sp?) of a right triangle with sides of 4 and 3 would be 5. Given a 5:4:3 ratio, a 15" monitor would have sides of 12 and 9 inches, giving an area of 108 sq inches. A 19" monitor would have sides of 15.2 and 11.4 inches, giving an area of 173.28 sq inches, aprroximately 60.4% larger. Figures based on actual measurements, of course, would be far more accurate, thus the "ballparking" disclaimer. Plus I didn't have a calculator handy and scribbled out the math on an old envelope.
