So what I thought I would do is to offer it up to the group as a permavine. This is from the USA network feed of this show. First one to e-mail me directly with a promise to offer it back to the group gets it. Jason ------------------------------ From: "Steve Terry" Subject: Re: Rex show tonight... Wow, now there's a novel idea. ------------------------------ From: "Rick Wolfish" Subject: Rex show review Date: 25 Sep 2005 08:53:11 -0700 I flew 3000 miles from Vermont, thus I had high expectations and the show exceeded my expectations! Started at 4:45 with the 1966 group, David Nelson, Sandy Rothman and Keith G. brother, Brian. They only played songs that the group played and David sounded fantastic. Next came a band that was influenced by Jerry, String Cheese. This is only the 2nd time I have seen them live, but I am a huge fan. They were terrific. Not sure of the player names, but the guitar player played pedal steel one song, very sweet, and the Chinese fellow played fiddel and mandelin, a very fine set. I second the statement it was great to see Merle. He was treated like a king and taken care of by Mountain Girl. JGB band sounded great, female singers brought the old times back. This review will be slightly out of order. We had good seats and when we arrived, there was a gift basket on our seat, when was the last time that happened to you at a show? There was a Hard back copy of Jerry's art book, new relix, hand made guitar magnet, candy bar and ben and jerry's coupon for a free pint. Ratdog only played for about a half hour, 4 songs, which was fine with me. Did I mention only Jerry songs tonight? Hamza El Din came out dressed in only a white gown, with 10 other drum players including Bill Walton and Mickey leading the group. There was also a choir dressed in white gowns, about 10 people. Oh, I saw Wavy Gravy in the audience. So Hamza does his middle eastern thing for about 10 minutes, and they they walk off stage as Jimmy, Bobby and a group come on and don't miss a beat or note. The "band" then played for about 3.5 to 4 hours straight! Bobby stepped up and he was on stage directing this whole period. I thought his singing was a bit weak, but his playing and attitude steller. It was amazing how smooth this section of the show was, every song there was a switch of musicians. It started with Ratdog's drummer and finally Billy and Micky relieved him for about the last 3 hours. All I can say, is I love Micky and Billy together. Ratdog's keyboard player was on a lot, but he alternated with Hornsby. Bruce did an amazing Walking in the Moon, everyone said Bruuuuse. Trey's first song was Help on The Way (I think) and the power went out in the middle of the song. I must confess being from Burlington Vermont, I am very fond of the Phish musicians. Like me anyway. Then for the next 3 hours, Warren, Jimmy, Trey and Mark would walk on and off in between each song. Jimmy seemed to play the least, of coure Warren blew everybody away everytime he was on stage. Warren did a Steller Blue which brought tears to my eyes. The fiddle player of String Cheese played quite a few songs, sounded like lead guitar on his violin. Only speech was Jerry's family, daughters and brother came out and thanked us and the 2 leaders of Rex came out and thanked us. The best for last. Those of you who read my posts know I have a special place in my heart for Keith and Donna, the 70s being by favorite years. Donna Jean looked and sounded fantastic!! She was on stage a lot, guessing about 3 hours, and that was where she belonged. Was both front and center and spent a fair amount of time on the back singing with the 2 lovely ladies from JGB. It was so special seeing her with the boys again. Even the poster and shirt was a fair deal, I did not buy them. Yes the poster was $40, but they only printed 500 and each was numbered and signed by the artist, very beautiful. The shirts were $25, but every show I go to they are $35 and up! The back of the stage was simple except for a very large guitar pick with a picture of Jerry's hand. 2 of 3 last songs were He's Gone and show ended with Touch of Grey. When the show ended everyone came out for a bow and Micky gave his speech that we should take the spirit home with us. Missing in action-Phil, Hunter and Grissman. Their loss. Needless to say, I AM A HAPPY PERSON NOW. Tonight the Rowan brothers and Dave Bromberg at the Fillmore and home Monday. Life should always be this good! Peace and love, Rick Wolfish Burington, VT (Now in Bay area). ------------------------------ From: "chosney" Subject: Re: Rex show review Date: 25 Sep 2005 09:03:45 -0700 Rick Wolfish wrote: > > Missing in action-Phil, Hunter and Grissman. Date: Sun, 25 Sep 2005 17:19:15 GMT I agree with Rupert about the alcohol consumption. One thing I always liked about shows at the Greek and at the Frost was because they were on college campuses that no alcohol was served. Some of the crowd around us was pretty drunk after a while and would yak louder during the quiet numbers. That being said I thought the show was exceptional. The guy who played guitar and sang in the JGB had Jerry's vocal inflection down cold. Man, it was errie at times. Donna Jean and the Jerryettes sang like angels. Bruce Hornsby and Trey doing Standing on the Moon was killer. Michael Kang's fiddle amd mandolin playing was great...Brown Eyed Women... YEAH!! Even Mickey's Fire on the Mountain rap didn't seem too cheesy. It makes one realize what beautifully crafted songs Garcia has left us. They will be played forever. Awesome show. Found a spot dead center on the lawn, and all was well. For about an hour... Then 2 young women, aged 18, sat down behind me. Well, sat down might not be the best term to describe it. More like, fell down on top of me, with a "my bad, duuuuude." Uh, oh... Then the screaming started. Finally, when one of them yelled, "Dude, they didn't even fucking search us. We didn't have to drink half that bottle," I had to turn around and say, "I hope that half bottle doesn't end up as puke on back." In unison, they both yelled, "No problem, duuuude; we're Professionals." Oh fuck. All of a sudden, an enjoyable evening was turning into a fucking nightmare, a veritable teenage wasteland. What to do? Aha. Geraldine to the rescue. I flashed on how, a few years back, Steve Lenier's girlfriend passed out from too much Geraldine, and the thought struck me: "These girls need to be drugged!" As I handed them the j, "thanks, duuuuuuude," they managed to scream in between bites of 'schoom. And then there was silence. Utter and complete silence. Geraldine saved the day. And night.
