Date: 23 Sep 2005 12:14:22 -0700 Dickey Betts played The Independent in 'Frisco last night and he BURNED THE PLACE DOWN! Seriously, Betts and Great Southern tore it up last night! Channeled the ABB of 1971, complete with a keyboard player who looked eerily like a twin of Gregg from that year. And sounded a great deal like him, as well. But it worked. I have never seen Dickey Betts, but I've been a fan for 30 years. So I had no idea what to expect. My brother saw him in Santa Cruz a few years back right after Betts was booted from ABB and said he put on "a competent" blues show. Last night had nothing in common with a competent blues show. This band was a jamming psychedelic-blues-southern-rock fireball! And Dickey was the arsonist, exploding in flames time and again. His son, Duane Betts, plays co-lead, and the old man gave him plenty of room to shine. He's good (got to be, in runs in the blood down where they come from) but it's gotta be hard to share the stage with a warhorse like his dad. Without being showy or anything, Daddy Betts took the kid to school on that Les Paul over and over. But they played some beautiful stuff together and Dickey is obviously proud of the kid (who looks like Dickey did 30 years ago.) In addition to guitars and keys, the band is two drummers (pretty much invisible from where I stood, but solid), bass and a beautiful young singer (Susan something?) who never stopped dancing--not for a second--from the time she hit the stage. Good voice, and as Joe Bob Briggs would say, a couple of major talents, to boot! She was as fun to watch as she was to hear. She shared vocals on Stormy Monday and several others, as well as excellent back-up work. There was also a young blond kid who played guitar on several tunes, mostly in the second set. Looking a lot like the other Allman, he stepped right up with Dickey on Liz Reed and they raged through the dual leads on that tune. Where does he find all these ABB clones? Dunno, but it works! Let me say right here that The Indepenent is the best venue in the city right now. Absolutely the best staff. Big enough to give a band like this room to rock, but small enough to feel like a private party. Crowd was maybe 300-400, max. Decent ventilation, small balcony, two elevated seating areas on the sides and good sightlines from anywhere in the club. After a limp opening band, Dickey Betts and Great Southern took the stage around 9:40pm. They managed to squeeze in one medium-length and two short sets and were done right at midnight. The two short sets were actually one with a throw-away drum solo in the middle. There were a number of tunes that I didn't recognize, but they surely delivered the goods: Southbound (slightly different arrangement), Liz Reed, Blue Sky (with a long Franklins' jam intro), Nobody Left to Run With, Mountain Jam. Encore was Ramblin' Man. Sorry I can't give better detail and account of the night, but the truth-in-advertising protocols mandate that I disclose a close encounter with the ever generous Geraldine (thanks, Joe!) that definitely colored my view of the evening. And that was a good thing. In summary: it was a rocking, raging good time last night. Where were y'all? This is a guy who considers nurses and teachers to be "special interest groups". One of the major problems with the Davis administration was that Davis was fundraising for his re-election doggy bag constantly, and pulling in millions of dollars from business and industry. So you never knew whether his position on any issue was a result of his notions of what was good for the state, or a payback of some kind for campaign donations. The whiff of corruption settled over his administration like stink on shit. Arnold has *outpaced* Davis significantly in his fundraising efforts. He, too, is raking in millions of dollars from corporate and private interests. Yet the motherfucker has the balls to stand up and call working nurses and working teachers "special interest groups". What were those two "interest groups" lobbying for? One was for Arnold to obey the law and implement the nurse hospital staffing ratio that the voters approved. Teachers were lobbying for Arnold to put the two billion dollars back into the education budget that he sort of borrowed the previous year. "Borrowed". Arnold persuaded the k-12 and higher ed folks that he needed to redirect two billion dollars from education budgets two years ago. He persuaded them that it was necessary ... they met him half-way and agreed not to challenge it, with the understanding that it would be back in their budgets the following year. What did he do the following year? He reneged on his agreement. There is the man of integrity and credibility in action. > It's impossible to have one person please anyone as a politician. Why do you think that people get emotional about the budget? I think it is because whenever there is a budget shortfall, there is always a plan to make cuts of some kind, and that usually means cuts in programs that people care about. There are two ways to close a budget shortfall. One is to cut spending. The other is to increase tax revenues. (Or some combination of the two.) There is your simple reality. Arnold only sees one way.
