We stay at The White Otter Inn in Atikokan, Ontario on the way in and on the way out of the backcountry and one of the reasons is the endless supply of high pressure hot water in the showers. I had a roommate from Saudi Arabia once, that guy *never* showered, just splashed himself with Brut every morning. Sumbitch stunk and on top of that stuck me with a couple hundred bucks of long distance phone calls to Saudi Arabia. The worst smelling human beings I have ever had the misfortune to be around were the three French kids in the seats adjacent to us at a concert here on campus. When I told the story of the stinky French kids to a friend who is far more cosmopolitan than myself she said Americans have a shower fetish and Europeans just smell human and healthy instead of Dial soaped and underarm sprayed. Date: Fri, 23 Sep 2005 14:01:18 -0400 The longest time I've gone was when I was in the hospital several years ago (spontaneous pneumothorax). I was hospitalized for 12 days and I couldn't take a shower. I was able to get a half-assed, self- administered sponge bath, but it almost wasn't worth it. 30 seconds after coming home I was in the shower till the hot water heater ran dry. These days the longest I go is when I go camping (4 days max so far). I do have a solar shower that sorta works, but it's not really the same. The kind folk that hang here at rmgd can take sole credit for taking my pretty meager Dead collection and making it something that I am extremely proud of. Any one of you guys could cruise the collection and find some juicy nugget that you'd like to hear. There are so many people to thank for the music they've shared that it would be very difficult indeed. You all know who you are so I'll refrain from mentioning you by name; I fear I'd leave someone out. So, when I finally get up and running sometime in the next two weeks at home, I will happily make a similar offer as my way of helping some of the new folks around here. Thank you all rmgd and thanks to the Good Ole Grateful Dead for making all this music sharing possible. Peas, JC ------------------------------ Reply-To: "The Iron Muffin" From: "The Iron Muffin" Subject: My NYC Experience 9/22/05 Date: Fri, 23 Sep 2005 14:31:46 -0400 Hey now, my freaky darlings. So on Wednesday, my friend Susan contacted me about taking a manuscript down to Random House publishers on Broadway. She's an editor, and sometimes she overruns her deadline by a few hours...that's when she calls me asking if I can make a day run down to the city. This time, she offered $200 for the trip. I quickly agreed. So on Thursday morning I get up at 5am, attend to my personal hygeine, put some clothes on, and go over to her house to pick up the manuscript. She is already awake, having recently adopted a shelter dog (cute lil thing, very friendly and well-behaved). She gives me the manuscript and off I go. I-91 is a nightmare through Hartford, so I take the first exit onto the Wilbur Cross Parkway. Mistake number one. It doesn't really turn into a parkway until Meriden. So I slog through the small town traffic and the lights and whatnot, then I make it to the actual parkway section of the parkway. The parkway wasn't too bad south of Meriden, although there were a few short delays. When I reached 287, I went east to the Saw Mill Parkway. This was a good call. Traffic was light, and there were no delays. I make it to the Henry Hudson parkway, and drop down into the city along the West Side Highway. I decided not to take the Muffinmobile into the city proper, so I took the WSH all the way to 42nd street, cut across 11th Ave onto 40th, and crossed the river by way of the tunnel. I parked in a parking garage in Hoboken that I have used before. Then I called up booie. I figured he might be up for a visit. I was right. I told him I would call him when I was back in Hoboken. I took the PATH train into the city. I had to jump the 1 train uptown to avoid walking 20 blocks. It was well worth it. So there I am in NYC. I walked up to the Random House building, dropped off the manuscript with the receiving department, and walked back out to the street. I then called Susan to let her know that the manuscript made it there OK, then I called up booie. I told him that I was running a little late, but that I was still on my way out there. He said it was OK, let him know when I got back across the river. So I took the 1 train downtown and the PATH back to Hoboken. I called booie, and he met me at the train station. Then we went back to his shop. Booie's father was there, so I got to meet him for the first time. He is a nice man, and as liberal as they come. Hooray for booie's dad! So there we were at booie's shop. I wanted deli sandwiches, so we went over to the kosher-style deli near booie's shop. The sandwiches were just as good as I remember them. I had a "double play", which is a first cut corned beef and pastrami sandwich on rye bread with mustard. MAN, that was one great sandwich. The cheesecake was also amazing. The half-sour pickles were not up to par, but I am very forgiving when I have a good sandwich in my hand. I got two sandwiches to go as well as the one that I ate on the spot at the deli. One was for the ride home, and the other was my lunch today. Booie and I went back to the shop and chilled for a little while. He said that he had a friend who could get us a little something something, so I decided to wait until his friend showed up. I was also more than a bit concerned about the traffic on my route home, so I ended up staying until about 7pm (I got to booie's shop at about 2pm). I was kinda tired, so while I waited for booie's friend to show up I fell asleep on the floor of booie's office for an hour or two. Ya gotta love Deadheads. There's always a crashspace to be had. Finally booie's friend showed up. He had some mid-grade commercial stuff he was trying to pass off as kind bud. I did not think that it was worth what he was asking, but I wanted to catch a buzz before I sailed off into the sunset. So I put down $20 and booie put down $20 and we got about three joints worth of bud from the guy. Then the guy and his friend sit around and "help" us smoke the ganja he just SOLD us. I didn't like booie's friend very much, but his friend's friend was pretty cool. I mean, this guy was going on about how great his bud was, and it was almost too wet to smoke! He also kept accusing booie of rolling the joint too tight. Booie and I kept looking at each other every time this guy made one of his stupid pronouncements. He kept going on about how much stuff he moves, how low the price he pays is, and how he gets very steep prices for his bud. Finally he left, and booie and I had a field day talking about him. So I left around 7pm after we listened to the traffic report and plotted out an escape route for me which avoided the tangle that is NYC rush hour traffic. I ended up taking the Garden State Parkway to 287e to 684n to 84w, and got home in a reasonable amount of time. My impressions of this trip: 1. Ya gotta pay to get into NYC. Every major route into the city has a toll at some point. You're free, however, to leave at any time without paying. 2. Booie's friend is kind of a jerk. We agreed about this when we were talking after the guy left. 3. $20 is WAY too much to spend for two mediocre joints. 4. New Jersey seems to want to nickel-and-dime you out of your money on the highway, whereas NYC just takes it all at once. 5. There are no gas stations on 684n, nor are there any exits that have a gas station. I learned this the hard way, but luckily managed to avoid running out of gas on the backroads of southern Connecticut. 6. I am considering looking for a different place to park and from which to take the train into NYC. Once, I parked in New Haven and took the train down from there, but that has a price of $38 just for the train. 7. Booie is still a cool cat, and it was good to see him again. 8. There is very little that beats a good kosher-style deli sandwich. 9. Next time I go to NYC, I'm going to make a point to take some time and explore...especially that "Ollie's Noodle Shop" that someone mentioned in another thread.
