Steve ------------------------------ From: "Stephen St." Subject: ndc-hand washing post bathroom? Date: Thu, 22 Sep 2005 22:02:35 GMT For years, I have noticed that the majority of men dont wash up after using the bathroom. Most of this opinion is from standing in mens rooms waiting to use the urinal at bars and sporting events. I have calculated the average to be around 60% of guys do NOT wash up after using the bathroom. I used to cringe when someone would introduce me a guy they worked with, usually grabbing a cigarette immediately to avoid the hand shake and subsequent urine sharing. Now, this from sports illustrated. These numbers are waaaay low. WASHINGTON (AP) -- Men are dirtier than women. So scientists confirmed by spying in public restrooms, watching as one-quarter of men left without washing their hands. The worst offenders were at an Atlanta Braves game.In contrast, 90 percent of the women did wash up.Wednesday's results mark the American Society of Microbiology's latest look at how many people take what is considered the single easiest step to staying healthy: spending 20 seconds rubbing with soap under the faucet. It also explains why these infection experts tend to use paper towels to open bathroom doors. There is no telling what germs the person before you left on the knob."It's a gamble," said microbiologist Judy Daly of Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, the society's secretary.Back in 1996, the society first studied how often people follow mom's advice to always wash up after using the toilet. Researchers lingered in public restrooms, putting on makeup or combing their hair, while surreptitiously counting. They concluded about one-third of people did not wash. The group sponsored an education campaign about how hand-washing can stop the spread of flu, diarrhea and other infectious diseases. Every few years, researchers repeat the spying. This time, 83 percent of people washed, reported Harris Interactive, a research company that last month monitored more than 6,300 public restroom users for the society. That is a little better overall. But take a closer look: -The worst hygiene was at Atlanta's Turner Field baseball stadium, where 37 percent of men left the bathroom without washing, and 16 percent of the women did. -New York's Penn Station had the biggest gender disparity, where 64 percent of men washed their hands compared with 92 percent of women. Grand Central Station was almost as bad. -The best hygiene was at San Francisco's Ferry Terminal Farmers Market and Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry and Shedd Aquarium, where only about 12 percent of people left without washing. ------------------------------ From: joker4153@comcast.net Subject: Re: Farewell, Farewell olde No. 7 Date: 22 Sep 2005 15:03:47 -0700 "Before you flame..."? When I know I'm going to be in an apartment with him, I try to get there first so I can have some music playing by the time he shows up, lest I be stuck listening to talk radio all day. Alas, I didn't get there in time this morning so Air America was already on the radio when I walked in the door. As I was replacing a bathroom fan, I was listening to the host talking about Ann Coulter. While I'm not a Coulter fan by any stretch of the imagination, I found myself getting irritated listening to the host and her partner(s) making "joke" after "joke" about Ann being a transsexual (or at least a skinny man in drag). I finally commented to John that the show was no different than what was being broadcast by Rush Limbaugh and his ilk. He shot me a look like I was crazy, so I continued by pointing out that the only thing that had been "discussed" over the course of the past half hour was the gender identity of Ann Coulter, the IQ of a caller who tried to point out that some of the blame for the New Orleans debacle rested on the shoulders of the local politicos, and allegations that Ann Coulter was a plagiarist. There wasn't anything close to civil or reasonable discussion going on -- and this was on something that bills itself as "Progressive Radio." That's about as accurate as FauxNews calling themselves "Fair and Balanced"... He finally conceded that there really wasn't a difference, but that he liked Air America nonetheless because they bashed Bush/Republicans/conservatives. How someone can listen to that type of drek - regardless of who the hosts are - all day is beyond me. I finally told him that it was time to listen to some music, so I shut off his radio and popped in an MD containing the "Robert Johnson - Complete Recordings" box set. The morning mood improved immmediately... =o) ~Ted (who considers talk radio to be the Jerry Springer Show for people w/out TVs) ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** The service addresses, to which questions about the list itself and requests to be added to or deleted from it should be directed, are as follows: Internet: dead-flames-request@gdead.berkeley.edu Bitnet: dead-flames-request%gdead.berkeley.edu@ucbcmsa Uucp: ...!{ucbvax,uunet}!gdead.berkeley.edu!dead-flames-request You can send mail to the entire list (and rec.music.gdead) via one of these addresses: Internet: dead-flames@gdead.berkeley.edu Bitnet: dead-flames%gdead.berkeley.edu@ucbcmsa Uucp: ...!{ucbvax,uunet}!gdead.berkeley.edu!dead-flames End of Dead-Flames Digest ****************************** .
