From: kirk@mcelhearn.com (Kirk McElhearn) Date: Wed, 21 Sep 2005 12:55:37 +0200 On jerrygarcia.com, talking about the 2/28/80 show: We dug into the vault and found pristine 24-track tapes of the Kean College performance. Okay, 24-track sounds cool. But wait - it was a 4-member band. So Jerry gets 4 tracks, two for guitar and two for vocals. Ozzie gets 4. Jahn gets two. And De Foncesca, the drummer, gets, say, 8, because drum kits are mixed multi-track. Add another 2 for Hunter's vocals, and that still only comes to 22, and I'm being liberal for the drums. So what the heck do they do with 24 tracks in such a setup? I am glad that I come across that way; Sometimes I don't know if people read things into what I post I have strong feelings about the issue as well. My father was a very successful Corporate Attorney and later in life a Government official (he ran NOAA under Bush 41) He believed passionately in giving back to society. One of the ways that he did that was by being a sponsor of a program in our town (New Canaan, CT) called A Better Chance. ABC brought promising inner city black kids to New Canaan, gave them a house to live in, and sent them to New Canaan HS. Not only that but as a sponsor family we had several kids live with us over summer vacations and on weekends. It was a great experience for my sisters, my brother and myself to truly get to know people who come from a background completely different from our own. Plus it let them know that not all white people are prejudiced and bigoted Here is a link to ABC for anyone who is interested in finding out more about them, they are a GREAT organization IMO http://www.abetterchance.org/ Anyway. I wish your niece and the kids that you work with the very best. You too FTM Scot ------------------------------ From: "Nick's Picks" Subject: Re: What are all those tracks for? Date: 21 Sep 2005 05:35:17 -0700 Neil: A/C is a weird place - all glitz and money-grubbing tackiness along the boardwalk where the casinos are, then a block or two in it changes to post-war Dresden. The casino hotel rates jump dramatically on Fridays/Saturdays (like triple, from $100 to $300/nite), so if you're going to all 3 shows you'll take quite a hit after Thursday. You can save quite a bit by staying close by, in Absecon for example. You'll find motels around most of the nearby mainland, but avoid anything on Route 30 or in Pleasantville (it's not Pleasant). There are myriad websites with hotel-availability checks; try www.atlanticcity.com and you'll see what I mean about the weekend casino room rates. The shore towns closest to A/C (Brigantine, Ventnor, Margate) don't have much at all in the way of lodging, but if you don't mind driving a little farther to and from the show, there are a few nice B&B's in places like Long Beach Island and Sea Isle City. She's doing a solo performance about being 'artist in residence' with NASA. In recent years, she's scaled back the visuals, and the musical accompaniment to her spoken word material has gotten sparser and sparser. That said, she is an incredibly engaging and witty speaker. Sherry, where are you getting the information about the brain scan as a diagnostic tool? From what I understand, ADD/ADHD is still more or less classified as a syndrome--researchers can't point to the exact cause but posit that there is some underlying neurological origin. It is diagnosed where I work via the Connor inventory, which asks a variety of people who interact with the student to evaluate his or her behavior, and developmental and school achievement information. The most definitive diagnostic tool is the administration of Ritalin. If it helps, one has ADD/ADHD. If not, not! R. > My son has ADHD and *believe* me, I know about it!
