Joe ------------------------------ From: "Roxanne McDaniel" Subject: Re: The REAL Disaster (NDC) Date: Sun, 18 Sep 2005 18:10:56 GMT "Richard Morris" <> wrote in message What I have seen is that there is a very real and widespread sense within the black community that it is difficult to the point of impossibility to be successful within the system that exists in this country, because of the sense that the deck is stacked against them due to racism. I think that all black people are aware of this, but have internalized it to varying degrees. Some have given up, and some actively try to beat a system that they feel has nothing for them. Those are either the welfare folks, or the criminals. Even black people who are successful within the system may have lingering doubts that their case is exceptional--they made it in spite of the system, not because of it. And most of them get reminders on a daily basis not to take anything for granted. If this is going to change, it has to change from within the black community, with the support of white folks. And Cosby's recent experience demonstrates how tough that is going to be. R. ************************* Well said. I heard a very moving story on NPR. It was a Katrina survivor at the Super Dome. As day 2 rolled around, the old, the young, were all being asked to line up for the buses (which of course, didn't come). Not in a polite, organized fashion but in one of disprespect and urgency. It was hot and hell and they were being forced to line up in the sun, with no water, no food. This woman described the fear that came over her as she started to watch police, drive right on by. The water trucks that drove right on by. The help that never seemed to arrive. Then the national guard began to arrive with weapons drawn. She believed that this was the end and this was going to be the way the establishment got rid of her and them. As everything she had was stripped away, so was her hope that she was going to be helped.... Tell me, is that the America you live? ------------------------------ From: Joe Subject: Re: The Bush clan are a bunch of criminals! Not one nation under the Right, or the moral majority, but one that can coexist in a more perfect way with each other. And he talks about what the original founders had in mind when expanding the union and spreading freedom. It was very enlightening! ------------------------------ From: "Carlisle" Subject: Re: The Bush clan are a bunch of criminals! Senate elections are every 2 years, alongside congressional elections. 1914 BTW was the first election where citizens were able to vote for their senator, previous to that senators were appointed by the state legislatures, as provided by Article 1, Section 3. The 17th Amendment changed that in 1913. Remember the guy? Best known perhaps for his essays written while hanging out at Walden Pond .... and for an essay that he wrote on civil disobedience. Someone once asked him why, instead of going off on retreat, he didn't get involved and try to go out and *do* something about the things that he was concerned about/complaining about/writing about. In other words, why he didn't get off his lazy ass and do something about it in the real world. His response was instructive, and should give you, and Cal O'Chortus something to ponder. I can't remember his excact words, as it has been many years, but I can paraphrase the gist of his response, and it goes something like this: "You know, I only have one life to live. Why should I have to spend my time trying to keep my government from fucking with me?" R. ------------------------------ From: "ck" Subject: Re: Clinton interviews..
