I met Edwin Edwards once. He was regular at Caesars in Vegas, often blowing upwards of 300k in bribe money at the craps tables. He was permanent, full RFB high roller. He was sitting at a bar drinking with a couple of shady looking cronies. I sat down next to him and started talking. Super funny nice guy, very open and honest about his state. He won after spending time in prison, IIRC. His opponent was David Duke. I also recall Jerry Brown, one of my all time favorite presidential candidates, getting his endorsement the first time he ran. He was the first governor to do so, so it was a big deal at the time. Corruption like that of Edwards and Republican John Rowland in CT is disgusting and unacceptable. If they're crooks, they should go to prison. But you have to have some sense of perspective in these things. How much corruption is there in the ongoing Iraq war profiteering done by the cronies of Cheney and Bush? And how much will there be in this Bush New Deal for the Gulf? Halliburton and Bechtel had no-bid contracts approved before the levees even broke. If Bush does what he claims he will do (have the feds fund everything but let the corrupt local officials handle and spend the money) how much corruption will happen in that process? In this country personal corruption is often punished with prison time. General corruption at the highest levels, corporate corruption, war and disaster profiteering, don't seem to garner as much outrage from certain quarters. This nonsense I see on every Usenet thread about political issues has to stop, at least if the posters who engage in it ever want to be taken seriously. There is this recent trend in which actions can no longer be judged on their merits. Every negative action by someone is automatically justified by arguing that someone, somewhere, has done something similar in the past. If this is the new national standard (and it sure appears to be when reading posts from supporters of Bush, the most liberal Democrat president of the last 100 years), then no murderer, no thief, no rapist, no child molestor should ever be charged with a crime, scrutinized, or even criticized. After all, someone somewhere has done this before. What's interesting however, is the fact that these Bush supporters (who support the most liberal Democrat president of the last 100 years) do not apply this get out of jail free card to people who stole food and water to stay alive while the president was golfing and getting his picture taken with country singers. They're criminals who should be prosecuted. Despite the fact that someone somewhere once engaged in looting themselves. The Bush family is unusual in both its widespread criminal behavior and in its tendency to produce children with addictive personalities. The obsessive desire to be liked and / or looked up to is common amongst all politicians. This must really be a big problem for the Bush family, causing those who feel disliked or ignored to resort to drug and alcohol abuse for comfort. GW Bush desperately wants to be liked, and the only way he knows how to achieve this and satisfy his addictive personality is to spend billions of dollars everytime someone says something nasty about him. He does it every single time. But he would never anger anyone by raising taxes. Reality often intrudes into his political fantasies, but is mostly ignored by him. I believe that drill sergeant mother of his is the root of many of these problems. No one can ever fully satisfy her and they all seem to want desperately to please her. I don't think that happens very often. There may be someone somewhere who has behaved in similar fashion as the Bush children. But they aren't the current president and his family. Bush is, has the power, and has the ability to prod a Republican Congress to create the single largest welfare and public works spending program in the history of the world, so he will go forward with it to ensure a positive "legacy", or so he thinks. The reality is this: right now we have a Republican president and he is a terrible one. He will be criticized. His addicted and criminal relations will be criticized. Just as the addicted and criminal relations of Clinton and Carter were scrutinized and criticized. It would be nice if the partisans would simply accept this inevitable fact of political life instead of continuously trying to cast blame on someone, somewhere, for something else. Ah ... this post is a leading candidate for most inane of the week, I think. The point being, of course, is that we should be prepared to accept the moral and professional failings of our political leaders and their families because, after all, "nobody's perfect". Of course, these very same people hate Clinton for his moral failings ... so it seems to be more a case of adjusting one's moral and ethical standards to one's political alignments. If it is Clinton, he besmirched the highest office in the land. If Bush ... well, ya know ... nobody's perfect. When using the "nobody's perfect" standard, Bush should be the poster child for the movement. He is about as far from perfect as we are apt to see in a U.S. president. I predict that junior will get off with a hand slap. Boys will be boys, y'know. Mummy and daddy support him. Of course, one could argue that the offspring of politicians are off limits, and that one incident does not constitute an epidemic. But, in reality ... it is more than one incident. It is a pattern of moral failings. Which then result in a pattern of legal failings. And, like Joe, I am coming to believe that those who want to come in here and minimize it all are fuckwits. Not deserving of respect.
