But I agree that this sounds phoney. Nylon and wool could build up a pretty good charge, but it unlikely he would have been unaware of it. Any contact by the wearer with any path to "ground" (and there are plenty in most modern buildings) would have discharged the static. In other words, every time he touched a metal surface, like his car door or office door handle/frame or water faucet, filing cabinet, he would get a little zap and his electrical potential would fall to near zero volts. Pretty much every time. Then he would have to generate friction between the wool and nylon to start "recharging." And it's not just metal. Wet surfaces, perhaps. Touching someone else. Zap! The reason is that the events there make no sense if > you think that we are confronting a natural disaster. Sure it does, at least if one subscribes to the Heart of Darkness belief about the human soul - that beneath the shiny veneer of civilization lies human savagery, which is only kept in check (much of the time, anyway) by societal constraints. And when those constraints go away the savagery erupts - one need only to look at human behavior during war or even during a major blackout -- to see this. ************************************************* Yes, it's similar to Maslow's heirarchy of needs. a.. Self Actualization Needs (full potential) a.. Ego Needs (self respect, personal worth, autonomy) a.. Social Needs (love, friendship, comradeship) a.. Security Needs (protection from danger) a.. Physiological Needs (warmth, shelter, food) You remember this pyramid that is used to describe parent/child bonding? It starts with physiological needs and once those are achieved you address security, and so on. You can apply this same principle to anything. Take for example, you start an internship and in the first week, the mentor doesn't know where he's gonna put you. So you have no office space, no desk, no where to sit and zone, no phone, no computer.... how productively will you work when your basic needs for doing the job can't be met? Do you get the sense of belonging and that you fit in? So yeah, if it had been me and my family at the super dome, and I had no money, no clean water to give my children, no idea where I was going to go... I KNOW I would've resorted to savagery! ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** The service addresses, to which questions about the list itself and requests to be added to or deleted from it should be directed, are as follows: Internet: dead-flames-request@gdead.berkeley.edu Bitnet: dead-flames-request%gdead.berkeley.edu@ucbcmsa Uucp: ...!{ucbvax,uunet}!gdead.berkeley.edu!dead-flames-request You can send mail to the entire list (and rec.music.gdead) via one of these addresses: Internet: dead-flames@gdead.berkeley.edu Bitnet: dead-flames%gdead.berkeley.edu@ucbcmsa Uucp: ...!{ucbvax,uunet}!gdead.berkeley.edu!dead-flames End of Dead-Flames Digest ****************************** .
