Who needs a private sector anymore? According to Bush, a public works and welfare program paid for by the federal government and run by inept and corrupt Democrat local and state officials is what's needed to rebuild the Gulf Coast. FDR's New Deal pales in comparison to the massive tax dollar giveaways proposed by Bush last night. Obviously if a Democrat had proposed such a huge and massive set of spending programs, to be controlled by inept and corrupt Democrat state and local officials, the howls from the right would drown out any other discussion. But since Bush has a R next to his name, its all good. Not sure what sickens me more; the lack of an immediate response to the hurricane or this radical shift in the role of the federal government. The precedent is now set: anytime any American loses anything due to any natural disaster, the federal government is obligated to not only provide you with food, water, and temporary housing, but a brand new house better than the one you had before, a new business in a building better than the one you had before, a free college education for all your kids, all in a community with water systems and roads and sewage treatment plants and levees and traffic signals all better than were in your community before. Plus a nice fat check for you spend however you please. Some communities may consider intentional implosion in order to get some of these handouts. At least Bush will never use that old "I want to give people a handup, not a handout" canard anymore. EGBH ------------------------------ From: leftie Subject: Bill Maher's Open Letter to W. I was under the impression that rebuilding traffic lights, water sytems, schools, sewage treatment plants, local and state roads and highways, etc. was the local and state government's responsibility. I was wrong; according to Bush its the responsibility of the federal government. But making a phone call to see if the city evacuated the hospitals and nursing homes, and sending 10 US military helicopters with food and water to a major American city 4 days after a flood and hurricane to save the lives of thousands of people on the verge of death, a scene watched on TV by everyone in the world except the head of FEMA, remains a local responsibility. Can we break this down? How and why and since when have these responsibilities changed? EGBH ------------------------------ From: "LP" Subject: Re: San Francisco Deadheads..... President Bush tells us that "big government is not the answer." President Reagan told us, "Our government is too big and it spends too much." But for more than 75 years, no Republican administration has cut the size of government. Since George W. Bush became president, government spending has risen nearly 25 percent. And the spending increase isn't just tied to the war on terrorism. The Office of Management and Budget says spending at the Environmental Protection Agency is up 12 percent; it's up 14 percent at the Agriculture Department, 30 percent at the Department of the Interior, 64 percent at the Department of Labor, and 70 percent at the Department of Education. And the pork keeps pouring out. Even the Peanut Festival in Dothan, Ala., got $200,000. Republican congressman Terry Everett got them the money. He wouldn't talk to us about it. But the locals said they like getting your money. "I think it's a waste of money, but if they're going to waste money, I guess it's better to waste it here than anywhere else," one man told me. Economist Stephen Moore, a Republican, says, "We fought a war against big government and you know what? Big government won." He noted, "You look at what's happened to the government in the 10 years since the Republicans took control of Congress, the government is twice as big." I agree that the entitlement mentality is partly to blame for permanent poverty. Good thing Bush is in charge, throwing billions at anything remotely resembling personal discomfort or effort or responsibility for the cleanup and aftermath of Katrina. Of course that means that the discussion about the entitlement mentality will disappear for another 20 years, since its now the Republicans who are literally giving away the store (and homes, and cars, and educations, and everything else anyone affected by Katrina may desire). So forget it, the discussion is over already. Why bother to work or do anything for yourself if some bad PR is all that's required to get the White House to give you everything you've ever dreamed of?
