Date: Thu, 15 Sep 2005 13:05:28 GMT Album Review - Blues Traveler - Bastardos! For its eighth studio outing Bastardos!, Blues Traveler turned to multi-instrumentalist and former Wilco member Jay Bennett for assistance, and the consequences of this decision yielded precisely what one could have expected. While the result is the band's riskiest and most adventurous album to date, it also has the unfortunate distinction of being the worst of its efforts. The problem is that Bennett's heavy-handed, kitchen-sink approach to recording is not well-suited to Blues Traveler's minimalist style, and all of the attempts to mesh these two worlds together largely sound awkwardly disjointed and misguided. This is an excerpt. It's not that I don't enjoy it, it is just that it is not as interesting some of Jerry's other bands. You may be on to something when you point out that the band sort of noodles through the jams when Jerry is not front & center. I have the same problem with Reconstruction. It is so different from Jerry's other stuff that I will listen to it for while and then put it away for months before I listen to any more of it. This may well be why these bands did not last for all that long a period of time. You are certainly correct imsjry when you say the Wicked Messenger on the GDM bonus disc smokes. Again, it is because Jerry takes a couple of solo's that just can't be beat. I thought my McIntosh amplifier was actually going to start melting down the first time I played it. In fact, the entire LOM bonus disc is better than the two disc official release in my view. I still have it in my car CD player after four or five weeks, while the official release has disappeared on to the shelf. I really wondered why Wicked Messenger was not included in the official release until I heard that it will be included in the upcoming Jerry Does Dylan release. Every now and then someone seriously proposes the new nation of Columbia, named after the mighty river. The idea is to group US states and Canadian provinces with similar attitudes and lifestyles. The assumption is that Canada is dead as a country, so the provinces need to go somewhere. Columbia would consist of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and northern California. Some would add northern Idaho or all of Idaho and western Montana and maybe Alberta. I'd add Alaska and the Yukon. This would be a nation rich in natural resources, along with a desire to protect them. Ag production would be huge. Several sophisticated cities with large Asian populations and the many ports and thousands of miles of Pacific Coastline would have Columbia looking to the Pacific Rim for natural trading partners. The people and towns of Columbia would have far more in common with each other than they do with the people and towns of New Jersey or Quebec. The transition would be easy culturally. I like when stuff like this rears its head, like the old split California in half idea. Always thought that was a great idea, as the Bay Area and LA are as different from each other as Alabama is different from Massachusetts. Of course maybe some diversity is a good thing. The assumption with this stuff is that everyone wants the various parts of their country to be the same. I say ok, but within Columbia there would still be tremendous diversity. Not that this will ever happen in a billion years.......... EGBH ------------------------------ From: joker4153@comcast.net Subject: Re: Why don't I like Legion of Mary??? But I got into Trane, Sonny Rollins and folks like that since high school way back in the ancient 1960s. But I have no need to place Martin "in there". My place has an unusual setup (as in cheapo); separate electric wall heaters in each room, each with their own thermostat. Its not central heat, which I would consider a bad thing normally. Certainly is bad for resale value. But for heating its gonna work pretty good, I hope. The few times I have turned on the heat since I moved in, I have never turned on a thermostat in more than a couple of rooms. Don't need to heat the guest room or the laundry room, don't need to heat the bedroom if I'm in the living room, no need to heat my den/office if I'm sleeping in the bedroom, etc. I still wish I had a stove and may end up getting one. But I'll give the wall heaters a go before shelling out any fun money. They're supposedly top of the line units, so we'll see.
