Recent research has shown that the myth of queer affluence IS a myth, and that for many (if not most) queer folk, heterosexism and transphobia mean lower income and, for some (numbers are hard to track), exacerbated poverty. I am pleased, then, to forward this request for submissions from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. If you know of any local folks who might submit their stories to NGLTF, it'd be awesome if you could also send them my way! We are working on a welfare publication that will talk about welfare and welfare reform in general and also identify how welfare is a GLBT issue. Some examples are: Homelessness and Hunger in the GLBT Community, GLBT Seniors Have No Access to Benefits, homeless GLBT youth, lesbian mothers, trangendered people who are harassed at work-fare sites, GLBT immigrants, and many others like these. Therefore, we are trying to identify how welfare has been discriminatory or if welfare has helped people, how the new welfare reform has hurt people on welfare. In addition, if you could help us spread the word that we are looking for stories through your list serves, newsletters or other organizations, we would greatly appreciate it. Please post widely. If you can provide us with any names, you may either respond to this email or call me at 212.604.9830 and ask for Rebecca Libed or Ingrid Rivera-Dessuit. -- Ingrid Rivera-Dessuit, M.A. Racial and Economic Justice Policy Analyst NGLTF Policy Institute (212) 604-9830 ext. 25 (212) 604-9831 (fax) .
