"aviational dimension"? (see your note below) I think some of the papas worked for the airlines, or met Rene or other papas on airplanes. One of the cultural attaches at the Finnish embassy gave me some of this information at some point, since it is relevant to point 2. >2. I agree with Robert Rowland: sounds great for New Orleans Two Finnish classicists have "performed" at US classical events in the DC area over the past 5 years: Jukka Amandt (who does the Elvis songs) at the ACL on our campus in 1996; another scholar who addressed the APA in Latin at the Washington meeting in 1998. It is my understanding that the ACL paid the expenses of Amandt, but the 1998 scholar was funded by the embassy (as those of you who attended that meeting may recall, Finnish classical items--e.g. copies of the Kalevala in Latin--were given gratis to registrants). A friend of mine, not a classicist, who works with the embassy on other projects was given copies of the 1998 APA "souvenirs" and Rene Rimon, which is how I found out about the rhps. I then spoke to this attache about the possibility of their bringing Rene and her group over as well. The problem is that it is very expensive: one person is doable, a musical ensemble much more costly. It was in this context that the airline connection came up. I am not clear if Rene worked for Finn Air or a Scandinavian airline, but utilizing airline connections to subsidize travel was considered. However, nothing has come of this yet. I would not hold out hope for New Orleans. >3. You never cease to amaze me, Judy.
