Both programs are for students who ar= e interested in pursuing a career in the Foreign Service. These programs are the State Department's ROTC programs. The Foreign Affairs Fellowship (FAF) pays for the junior and senior years o= f college and the first year of graduate school. The participating school pays the second year. The award covers the cost of tuition, living stipen= d (based on the institution's room and board rate), mandatory fees, reimbursement for books and one round-trip travel between home and school during the junior, senior, and first year of graduate school.=20 The student is required to attend a summer institute between the junior and senior years of college. The typical seven-week institute curriculum consists of course work in economics, calculus, and policy analysis, with exercises to develop oral and written communication skills. In addition, there are two paid summer internships the following summers -- one at the Department in Washington, D.C. -- and the other at one of our embassies overseas. The student must maintain a 3.2 GPA. Each successful candidate is obligated to a minimum of four and one half years of service in an appointment as a Foreign Service Officer. During their studies and during their appointment as a Foreign Service Officer, candidates must meet the Department of State entry requirements which right now consist of taking and passing the Foreign Service Written Examination and the Oral Assessment. It's a great opportunity for any student who is interested in the Foreign Service. Applications can be obtained for both the FAF and the GFAF program on the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation website at www.woodrow.org The deadline for the Foreign Affairs Fellowship is February 16th which doesn't give us a lot of time to reach out to those outstanding students on your campuses. =20 The Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship (GFAF) is a very similar program fo= r seniors that are graduating this year and going on to graduate school. The winners are expected to enroll in a two-year full-time master's degree program at U.S. graduate institutions only. But it can be in any field of study (such as public policy, international affairs, public administration, or academic fields such as business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages). Again, the student must maintain a 3.2 GPA and pay back a minimum of 3 year= s of service after completion of his/her degree in an appointment as a Foreig= n Service Officer. A paid internship in Washington, D.C. and a paid internship overseas at one of our embassies is offered during the summers. During the time that the candidate is studying and during the 3 year servic= e time, the candidate must also meet the Department of State entry requiremen= t for Foreign Service Officers.
