(fwd) Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Uwash-Spam: Gauge=IIIIIII, Probability=7%, Report='__C230066_P5 0, __CT 0, __CT_TEXT_PLAIN 0, __HAS_MSGID 0, __MIME_VERSION 0, __SANE_MSGID 0' The department has submitted a proposal to the UW Student Tech Fee Committee requesting funds to replace the computers in the student computer lab's smaller room (More 001A) with 25 new Dell windows workstations and 19" LCD flat panel monitors (like those in the main lab More 001). We stand a far better chance of getting the proposal approved if we can show student support. You can show your support and comment on the proposal at: http://www.ce.washington.edu/STF/ It takes less than a minute to vote. To paraphrase Jerry Mcguire: "Help us to help you!" This proposal won't cost you anything more than what you are already paying each quarter. All full-time students pay $40/quarter for the student tech fee whether or not their department submits a proposal. We're just trying to get something back for your money. If you're interested in reading the full text of the department's proposal it can be viewed at: http://techfee.washington.edu/proposals/2005-090-1 If the proposal is funded, some of the retiring Dells can be moved up to the ASCE lounge on the third floor. There are already two older computers up there for students to use. We could replace those with 3 or 4 of the Dells coming out of the lab. Some of you have asked why those computers in the ASCE lounge aren't loaded with all the same software applications as those in the lab. The preference is that the ASCE lounge computers be used only for checking email and casual web browsing rather than doing work (much like the public computers at the IMA and the HUB). The rest of the Dells will be made available to TA's and for other student use. Suffice to say all the retiring Dells will be put to good use in support of students. We have also ordered more of the same computer tables that are in the main lab for the smaller lab room. They will arrive later this month and should be installed prior to the start of winter quarter. The layout will be similar to what is in the room now. The new tables on the left side of the room will still be 4-feet long with one computer each. But on the right side of the room the new tables will be 7-feet long to better accomodate two computers each. This should still leave plenty of space in the middle for the aisle. Plus all the new tables will have hanging CPU holders on the underside. We hope everyone is happy with the computer lab. Thanks for everyone's cooperation with the bottled water only policy. If you have any comments, suggestions, gripes, feel free to let me know or email help@ce.washington.edu. Thanks and please vote for our STF proposal!
