Fortunately, it was within the pilot area for LandScan USA. EPA's Region 6 office was able to provide Nighttime/Daytime population maps with in the response area to the Texas Department of Health (TDH). You can contact David Stinchcomb (521/458-7111, extension 6259 or dave.stinchcomb@tdh.state.tx.us) at TDH for the exercise debriefing materials. Bioterrorism GIS/Mapping Exercise Summary: Staff from the EPA Regional Response Center and the GIS program participated in a simulated bioterrorism exercise with the Texas Geographic Information Council. Texas Department of Health lead the exercise. In the exercise, two biosensors were found positive near Herman Park in Houston and potential public health disaster scenario followed. TDH used its Health Alert Network (secure web site) and email to inventory available data sets and request maps from participating agencies. EPA Region 6 provided several maps including daytime and night time population maps using pilot population data from an EPA Office of Reseach and Development (ORD) project (LandScan USA). State epidemiologists were impressed with the availability of data and the timeliness and utility of the mapping products provided. TDH wants LandScan for assessments around all nuclear power plants in Texas.
