Sucks, indeed! What the HELL will this reconfiguration, shuffling, reformulation and general compromising of in-depth training achieve? It seems as if the "new way" (Newt Weigh?) will require MORE personnel and certainly more planning than any unit should be expected to conduct under circumstances of this nature without achieving a damn thing! While I believe that Slavic depts. shouldn't go on in the old Lang'n'Lit way, but should introduce cultural studies into their programs (we did four years ago and it's made a difference in various ways to the kinds of students we attract and to enrollments in undergrad. courses--ultimately affecting quality), I think this is exactly the wrong way to go about "innovations" --and I see nothing innovative about such an irrational move as the one outlined by D. Waugh. If ever the Peter Principle seemed at work, it's here! With angry sympathy, Helena .
