The rules are in the attached file. The basic idea is to design and build a timber column of a given length to hold a given load at the lowest cost. We tried it during Math Day last month, and it was very popular. It also proved slightly more difficult that it appeared at first sight. So far, Russell Larsen is the man to beat. We would like to have some columns built before Friday, so we can have them on hand to test when the first Open House visitors come into the lab. Please consider building your column by Thursday night. Vince Chaijaroen in the Structures Lab will be happy to make arrangements for you. All materials and tools will be supplied by the lab. Good Luck! John F. Stanton Professor Dept. of Civil Engineering Tel: (206)-543-6057 Box 352700 Fax: (206)-543-1543 University of Washington Seattle WA 98195-2700 .
