About 55 % of faculty and 40 % of staff drive alone to campus. Our research shows that transportation choices are important to people, most faculty and staff do not know the variety of transportation options available and that they think direct mailing is a good way to communicate with them. Each postcard has a different message while staying consistent to the "Relax: there is more than one way to get here" theme. Repeating messages through a variety of media is an essential element of learning and advertising, both to gain new customers and to reinforce behavior. We do intend to target mailings more precisely in the future as more mailing (and e-mail) list options become available. The UPASS is a $8 million per year program. We spend less than 1% on advertising and mailings, and the postcards are made from recycled paper. Our competition -- General Motors, Ford, et al, spend a lot more money convincing people to drive. It sounds like you are a committed bus rider. We appreciate your comments and apologize if you have been offended by our efforts to expand UPASS participation. ****************************************************************************** Transportation Office University of Washington Box 355212 (206) 543-0450 ****************************************************************************** On Thu, 18 Mar 1999, Judy Schroeder wrote: > I just sorted our departmental mail, and put the third RELAX postcard in > everyone's boxes.
