The room was indeed crowded, some were standing in the back. I suspect there were 100-150 people in there. I will leave it to others to say what they thought about the hearing itself. I am too close to it all, and it has been a very long time, so I am not sure I can really be objective. What is going to happen now is that the final report is due by March 15. Salomon suggested it will be done earlier. Once Simpson gets it, he and College Council will make final decisions. If you are still writing letters they should be directed now to him and College Council. We'll put the list with College Council members and their addresses (e-mails are better here since there is not much time left in the process) on the list later today. Final decisions on cuts are expected by April 15. Some other news. The Senate has apparently passed "our" bill (the phrasing in the Daily was vague, and neither The Seattle Times nor the PI said anything about it yet so I am being vague too. The bill is definitely alive and well -- and that is what matters). If it is in the House by now we should definitely switch our attention to the House. More on that also later this afternoon when we learn more details. There was an article in yesterday's PI by John Iwasaki "Students fret, flee as UW programs cuts debated. A rather ominous title. Two of our students were quoted: "Keoki Young frets that the Slavic language (sic) and literature department's name is 'smeared' even if the department survives." "While some communication students are inquiring at in-state journalism programs, students in speech communication and Slavic language (sic) and literature say they would have to go out of state to find a comparable program. 'They say people will be able to finish their degrees... but professors would be leaving right and left,' said Lisa Frumkes, co-chair of the Association of Graduate Students of Slavic. Young, a junior and a Slavic studies major, said a decimated faculty would lead to a watered-down degree." Galya Diment .
