Below is some more info on "what = YOU can do". I am sure that cascade bicycle club will be there in force to oppose this, but drop by if you want your opinion to be heard. Public Meeting May 13 at 7:30 pm at the City Hall Also, the city is renovating the Fremont Bridge and has neglected to pay = any attention to bike flow over the bridge for the new design. There is an = open house if anyone is concerned http://www.cityofseattle.net/transportation/fremontbridgeapproaches.htm Ryan -----Original Message----- From: Peter Hartmaier [mailto:Peter.Hartmaier@gte.net]=20 Sent: Wednesday, April 28, 2004 21:40 To: Ryan Hartmaier Subject: Lake Forest Park City Ordinance 907 could change Burke Gilman = trial into a a gravel path. Some of your biking teammates and riders may be interested in this development in Lake Forest Park. This ordinance is up for public = comment on May 13. When you ride the BG trail you know when you are in Lake Forest Park when you hit the 10 mph speed limit signs. They have had police = out on the trial handing out speeding tickets to bikes in the past. Clearly, = the community is trying to make it impractical for bikes to use the trail. This ordinance will = remove an exemption from the regulations regarding trials. That exemption = allowed the BG trail to made of impervious material (i.e. pavement) when it = crossed over wetland buffers. If this exemption is removed, King County will = not be allowed to continue the surface maintenance. We are unsure of what will happen. Will the pavement be ripped out? Will the existing hard = surface be allowed to deteriorate? What is clear is that King County has a program = to maintain the trail and this ordinance will prevent that. It seems that = with pot holes and root bumps Lake City Council might get speed control or = trail avoidance. Cascade Bike Club will attend the public meeting. Cascade is strongly opposed to this ordinance change on the grounds that the BG trail is a = vital link to the bicycle network and to have a section revert to soft surface creates a hazard to biking, forces riders onto the traffic, and destroys = an asset for more people than those in Lake Forest Park. There will be = more information posted at http://www.cascade.org/Advocacy/ in the next few days. Please forward this notice to your biking community. Public Meeting May 13 at 7:30 pm at the City Hall .
