The position will involve backpacking for up to 9 days at a time (5 days off) and will include hiking an average of 13 miles per day on uneven terrain with extreme natural hazards (river crossings, snow crossings, extreme weather, dangerous wildlife, etc) to identify bear rub trees, submit detailed data forms, and employ map/compass/GPS. The 9-day hitch may also be made up of shorter day trips or multi-day trips and may involve interacting with local landowners. The trails along the western edge of the Mission Mountains are extremely steep and are not always maintained; applicants must be physically able to hike under strenuous conditions carrying heavy loads for 9 days. A volunteer is needed immediately to begin our next 9-day hitch on July 1st through August, though we hope to find individuals able to work through September. Our field staff is very large but distributed widely; the volunteer will be working with one USGS technician for the remainder of the season. Volunteers earn $15 per day worked and a room will be provided in the technician's home near Bigfork at the NE corner of Flathead Lake.
