Field research grant awards are derived fro= m funds contributed by Earthwatch members who serve as volunteer participants on research projects. Volunteers are educated and motivated individuals wh= o are recruited and screened by Earthwatch to meet scientists=92 needs. To date, Earthwatch has supported over 2,800 research projects in 120 countrie= s and 40 US states, with more than 65,000 volunteer field assistants contributing over $53 million in research grants. Eligibility Scientists, resource managers, and qualified professionals involved in basi= c and applied research are eligible to apply as individuals or as teams. Principal Investigators must be present in the field and oversee all research activities. Professionals from any nationality, for work in any regional area, are eligible to apply. The Projects The following are examples of activities on past and current projects: =95 Inventory of biological resources and ethnobiological knowledge at M= t. Koroyanitu National Park, Fiji aimed at building community support for educational programs and local involvement in field research; =95 Observation and documentation of resource consumption patterns at family and community levels affecting quality of life and carrying capacity in the vicinity of Kerala, India; =95 Testing of solar ovens and wind-generated power as alternative appropriate technology solutions to the depletion of forest resources and to encourage community development and empowerment in Kenya; =95 Monitoring change in high risk behavior and the effectiveness of educational training on health issues pertaining to the high-level presence of pesticides in local environments around the Mississippi Delta; =95 Collection of oral history and survey data to aid in establishing environmental and resource protection guidelines pertaining to tribal, commercial, and recreational fishing practices, Skagit River, Washington state; =95 Cultivation of experimental agricultural plots in high-risk Sumatran villages to instruct farmers on pasture management and grazing principles in order to balance soil erosion, lo= w pasture productivity, and an increasing demand for beef. Grants Grants range from $16,000 to $48,000, depending on project length and numbe= r of volunteer participants involved. A typical Earthwatch project fields 4 to 5 sequential teams, each consisting of 5 to 12 volunteers, over several months. Project teams normally spend 8 to 15 days in the field, as most participants are on leave from their professional organizations. Earthwatc= h grants cover the cost of maintaining volunteers and principal research staf= f in the field. The grants may also assist with other project expenses, but cannot be used for PI salaries, capital equipment, or overhead costs. Preliminary proposals for field research should be submitted 1 year in advance of the anticipated field dates. Full proposals, if invited, are peer reviewed.
