He will be giving two presentations on the UW campus (one in Geology and one in Civil Engineering). Chris is a geomorphologist in the school of environmental engineering. He has done research on hydraulic effects of wood debris in low gradient rivers (partitioning roughness and investigating influence of wood loading on conveyance). He's also worked on water quality and quantitative aspects of fluvial geomorphology. He currently is working on urban stream restoration. I've laid out a tentative schedule for his visit. Everyone is welcome, just please let me know what you're interested in so I can plan accordingly. There will be LIMITED space on the rafting trip, so it will be on a first-come basis (kayakers who can handle this part of the Sauk are welcome join us!). And please spread the word and feel free to distribute this annoucement. Chris Gippel visit to UW: Sat. 6/21 arrival welcome dinner (out or at tim's) Sun. 6/22 raft trip down Sauk River (ending up in Darrington) whitewater trip with 2 class IV rapids Cost will be $30 plus $15 for a wetsuit (required) (may be able to return some of that) IF YOU WANT TO GO, YOU MUST GET TIM $$ BY MONDAY 6/9. Mon 6/23 UW Campus - discussions, Geol and Cive presentations eng/geol dinner(?) Tue 6/24 " " picnic at tim's (?) Wed 6/25 King County meetings, field trip to stream restorations King Co. Contact: John Bethel brew-pubs (?) Thu 6/26 Seattle landslide field trip brew-pubs (?) Fri 6/27 possible camping trip related to Tim's research Sat 6/28 will be on your own for equipment/food and Tim may Sun 6/29 be doing field work, he won't be "leading" a field trip. If you're interested, please contact Tim. Mon 6/30 Departure Please let me know if you would like to join us on any of the activities listed or if you'd like to hear Chris's presentations on stream restoration in Australia and modelling hydraulic geometry of alluvial channels - I'll try to schedule the presentations so they can work for the maximum number of folks. I hope you'll take advantage of this opportunity to meet a great fluvial geomorphologist, learn about research down-under, and catch-up with local academic and professional colleagues! If anyone can lend me a hand in helping out (e.g., giving Chris a campus or lab tour, taking him bicycling or around town, planning a dinner or lunch, ....), I would appreciate the help! (email or phone messages). Sincerely, Tim -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tim B.
