Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China The Washington State China Relations Council, in cooperation with the Washington State China Chamber of Commerce, cordially invites you to attend a grand celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China Wednesday, September 29, 6:30 PM at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers. This reception will be hosted by the Honorable Wang Yunxiang, the new Consul General to the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco, on his first visit to Seattle in his new post. He will be joined by special guest Lt. Governor Brad Owen. Date: Wednesday, September 29, 1999 Time: 6:30 - 8:30 PM Place: Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers, 1400 Sixth Avenue, Seattle The People's Republic of China was founded on October 1, 1949. China has come a long way over the past fifty years. With a quarter of the world's population and vast land, it is being rediscovered and redefined as an integral component of U.S. global trade and investment. A gateway to Asia, the State of Washington is benefiting from strong ties with China. The interdependent trade relations are clearly a determining factor in the sustained economic growth in both China and Washington State. Let us make September 29 a grand occasion for both Washington and the PRC as we celebrate the PRC's 50th anniversary, and our friendship, partnership, and cooperation. The Honorable Wang Yunxiang was appointed to Consul General (rank of ambassador) of the Consulate General People's Republic of China in San Francisco in August 1999. His career in Foreign Service has spanned a total of twenty-seven years, serving as a diplomat to countries such as Malta, Uganda, Norway, and Zambia. His last appointment was as Ambassador to the Republic of Zambia in 1996-1999. In addition, Mr. Wang had also served as senior consultant at the Department of West European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in 1988-1990, and as the Deputy Director General of the Information Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in 1991-1996. Please RSVP by September 22 to zhao@wscrc.org or call 206-441-4419, ext. 20. Business attire is recommended. This event is free of charge. For the release of his latest book, A Great Wall (PublicAffairs $27.50), Mr. Tyler will be in Seattle to give his extraordinary account of the complicated and combative history between the two nations. More than just a review of U.S. policy towards China, Mr. Tyler captures the U.S. and China's epic struggle over three decades by revealing a wealth of new revelations about secret diplomacy and political intrigue by both sides. Patrick Tyler speaks Chinese and has extensive experience as an investigative journalist in China. After several years of research, this latest work includes material from 15,000 pages of newly declassified documents as well as over 200 interviews with presidents, secretaries of state, Chinese officials, and other key policy makers. According to Tyler, "I have written the book I wanted to read when I first went to China." Join the Council as Patrick Tyler shares with us this definitive book and his thoughts on the future of Sino-American relations. This is sure to be an important event for anyone interested in the shifting dynamics of the post-Cold War world order. .
