Date: Thu, 16 Apr 1998 12:45:55 PDT From: Peter VanVleet Emerson has posted the official results. They can be found at: http://weber.u.washington.edu/~tongcoec/Conference Once again we kicked butt, winning the ITT, TTT and Road Race as a team. We really dominated the ITT, having 4 of the top 6 Men's A, the top 2 women and 3 of the top 4 Men's B. Randy continued his winning streak over Rusty (Beall of UO) on flat TT's, edging him out by 1 sec and winning the ITT. Laura totally dominated the women's ITT and beat up on a lot of the guys as well. And Ben's aero helmet and the fact that I removed my water bottle cages gave me a 1 second lead over Paul. Only 4 teams ran the TTT, WSU Men, UO Women and UW Men & Women. I've never heard so much whining and lame excuses as to why people couldn't ride another 6 miles (in a pace line with 3 other people). I really couldn't believe that the UO team wimped out after their school bought them all Trexel Ti Aero helmets. And out of 7 UW riders, we could only find one (thank you Tony!) who wanted to do it. The rest of you, and we know who you are, should be ashamed! After doing so well in the ITT, it wasn't a big surprise that UW rocked the TTT. And despite a poor start, ridiculous turn around (and a botched finish), the men's TTT still managed to catch the WSU men's team. It's too bad the Emerson didn't also record the times of the TT's, as that gives a lot more insight as to how well people were doing. For once people didn't use the tired analogy of "just like Madronna" when describing the hill in the road race. And I remember how quiet the van got as we drove down the hill (for 15 minutes), on our way to the TT. Without a doubt this was a climber's course. The Men's A faltered a bit in the RR. It seems as though we are all a bunch of flat TT riders. Randy got 2nd, (I knew we brought him for some reason), behind the lighter than air Rusty. The Men's A managed 2, 9, 10, 11, 16. However, it was once again the women and the Men's B that came to the rescue. The women scored an impressive 1,2 while the Men's B had 4 of the top 6. With these much needed points we won the RR. In a combined (but scored separately) race, Laura not only won the women's field but was 2nd overall in the B's! At this rate, we're going have to start signing her up in the Men's A field. And Anthony finished strongly, despite having ground the bearings in his left pedal into a fine paste on the way up the climb. I was knocked down to 3rd spot in the Men's A individual omnium. No surprise there as we can't expect Rusty to throw his chain in every race. And I'm closely followed by Paul and Richard. All of us are clamoring for the number 2 spot. The women's rankings haven't changed much, with UW spread throughout the rankings, holding the 1,3,5,8 spots. Tony still held onto his King of the B's title despite spending the weekend racing A's, on which he remarked, "I've got my work cut out for me." However, Matt is moving up fast with Conner and Pat not far behind. This is all going to come down to the last race. So the good news is that we have a respectable lead going into the conference championships, for both the Conference Title and the National's Qualifier. We have about a 50 point lead in both of these categories over UO. However, conference championships (April 25th/26th) will be scored 1.5x as much. And this is going to be in UO's backyard. They're going to be there in force. And they could still win, especially if we sit back and take it easy. So now is the time to sign up for the last great collegiate weekend of the 1998 season. Bend OR is about as far as the last away trips and will provide a new and exciting race venue. Let's show up at full strength and really crush the competition! If you want to go please send email to Paul (bubbab@u.washington.edu). Even if you're just thinking of going please send him email and let him know, just so we can get some idea of how many vans we'll need. Thanks, Peter P.S. The people at Velonews have been talking to me and several other people in the conference about how the collegiate racing has been going. I'd keep on eye on the collegiate section in the next issue or two for our "big" write-up. .
