Welcome! I have one specific question from a student. If students apply and are denied admission for Spring 2005, will you be communicating with them regarding the reasons and the possibility of re-applying for Fall 2005? Would they need to complete a new application or reuse the one from Spring '05? I look forward to meeting with you as you visit campuses. Nancy Nancy Kolosseus Career Center Program Coordinator Counseling, Advising and Career Center Everett Community College 2000 Tower Street Everett, Washington 98201 425-388-9263 >>> susani@u.washington.edu 08/20/2004 11:13:26 AM >>> Although I was introduced on the listserv by a colleague, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I am the new Lead Admissions Counselor and Transfer Outreach and Review Coordinator for the Office of Admissions at the University of Washington. I am new to the northwest, having recently moved from The University of Texas at Austin, but I am not new to admissions, advising, and student services. I am a social worker who has chosen to work in this field because of the perseverance and resiliency of students who deserve access to higher education. I am really looking forward to working with all of you who assist students in their pursuits. I am sure many of you have been working with students, parents, and community members who have interpreted news articles and policy changes to mean that the University of Washington is not interested in or will not accept applications from transfer students. Most of the calls I receive start out with "my brother's girlfriend's father said." I share in your frustration when responding to these inquiries and want to assure you that we are still very interested in transfer students. An op-ed piece by the University of Washington will be appearing in the Seattle Post Intelligencer next week. We hope that will assist with some of the misinformation. We will send you a copy when it is available. What has been helpful to me is reiterating that UW-Seattle has a commitment to community college students and has a longstanding agreement that at least 30% of new undergraduates each year will come from Washington community colleges. We are not accepting new applications for winter quarter because we will fill all spaces with community college applicants we could not accommodate in autumn quarter. This is inconvenient, at the very least, for transfer students who have been planning to apply for some time. We understand this and have announced that we are open and taking applications for spring 2005. The online application for spring 2005 is available. Applicants are welcome to start working on it, but they will want to review the form periodically for changes before they actually submit it, as a few small changes will be made between now and October 1. Our new Personal Statement prompts and some writing tips are revised and available on our website at http://www.transfer.washington.edu/apply/details/statement. We hope the revised statement will allow us to learn more about the student's academic and personal achievements as we review applications in a comprehensive and holistic way. I will be happy to share updates about the new transfer application and admission process as we work out more details over the coming months. If you have any specific questions, feel free to contact me. I appreciate all the work you do in preparing students who wish to transfer to four-year institutions, including the University of Washington. I look forward to meeting you all when I am on the road visiting community colleges this fall and winter.
